Two websites can publish useful content about the same subject and still have very different backlink profiles.
One may receive links from industry publications, relevant blogs, professional organizations, or trusted resource pages. The other may struggle to attract attention despite publishing regularly.
Instead of building links blindly, it can be helpful to examine the websites competing for your target audience.
This is where backlink gap analysis becomes useful.
A backlink gap analysis helps you investigate referring domains that link to competitors but may not link to your website. These differences can reveal potential outreach and content opportunities.
For example, suppose you run an online marketing blog.
Your competitors might receive links from:
Industry resource pages.
Expert interviews.
Relevant business directories.
Research articles.
Guest contributions.
Original studies and useful statistics.
You can investigate those sources and ask a more important question: Why did those websites earn the links, and could we create something genuinely valuable for the same audience?
SerpSpur Backlink Gap Analysis is designed to help users investigate backlink differences and identify potential link-building opportunities.
A sensible workflow includes comparing relevant competitors, checking the quality and relevance of referring domains, examining the pages that earned the links, and planning outreach based on genuine value.
Not every competitor backlink is worth pursuing. A link from an unrelated or questionable website isn't automatically beneficial just because a competitor has it.
You should also avoid treating backlink counts as a guarantee of higher rankings. Links are only one part of a broader SEO picture.
Question for SEO professionals:
When you analyze competitor backlinks, what do you investigate first?
Referring-domain relevance
Domain-level authority metrics
The content that earned the link
Competitor link gaps
Outreach opportunities
