You might already be using the new DeepSeek model without changing a line of configuration.
DeepSeek’s 17 October changelog says deepseek-flash now accesses DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash-1017. It also recommends DeepSeek Harness 0.2.1-rc.1 or later for the new model.
So there are at least two moving pieces: the model behind an API alias and the software surrounding it. If you operate the open weights, there is a third: the exact repository revision you downloaded.
An alias is a route, not a frozen experiment
The useful property of an alias is convenience: you can keep a stable configuration while the provider improves the backend. The inconvenient property for a comparison is the same one.
“We used deepseek-flash” does not identify a dated model revision by itself. Record when the request ran and preserve the provider’s current release note. Save returned model metadata if available, while recognizing that a response identifier may itself be an alias rather than an immutable weight hash.
DeepSeek’s September changelog also described temporary compatibility routes from older model names. For a new integration, check the current documented name directly. An old configuration continuing to work is not proof that it still points at its original model.
Upgrade the harness deliberately
The recommended harness version is worth putting beside the model name in a migration note. A harness controls how an agent interacts with tools and its environment. Changing that alongside the model makes an observed improvement harder to attribute.
A useful comparison record separates the model change from harness changes. Keep prompts, tools, task inputs and stopping conditions visible. Check the task result, not just the final message.
This article has not installed or evaluated DeepSeek Harness. The minimum version above is DeepSeek’s recommendation, not a compatibility claim established by this author.
The open-weight route needs different notes
The official model card identifies the checkpoint and an MIT licence. It also says this release does not provide a Jinja chat template. Instead, it points to a Python encoding implementation and the Rust/Python deepseek-recipe toolkit.
That is a reason to inspect the supplied prompt encoding rather than transplant a template from a different model. Message roles, thinking content, images and tool calls need a consistent representation. A server accepting a request does not prove those pieces were encoded correctly.
For reproducibility, record the repository revision, weight format, serving implementation and prompt encoder separately. A public checkpoint is not evidence that it fits a particular laptop; no weights were downloaded for this article.
Read the benchmark footnotes before the ranking
The model card names Claude Code for Terminal-Bench 4.0 and Mini-SWE-V2 for DeepSWE v1.1. Keep those conditions attached to the reported results. A result from another harness or benchmark version is a different measurement until its setup is checked.
The upgrade checklist is therefore small: current alias, harness version, exact checkpoint, prompt encoding and a task with a verifiable outcome. Each answers a different question. Keeping them separate makes the next debugging session much easier than “but the model name didn’t change.”
