So your iPhone hands you a HEIC file, and now you need it in a different format. JPG, PNG, or PDF — they're all "convertible," but picking the wrong target means bloated files, lost quality, or documents nobody can open. I've converted thousands of HEIC files while building a browser-based converter, and the choice comes down to one question: what are you going to do with the result?
I'm the developer of FileOnTap, a free converter that processes files locally in your browser — nothing gets uploaded. Here's a practical guide to choosing the right conversion path.
The 60-second explainer: what is HEIC, and when to convert it
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It stores photos at roughly half the size of JPG at comparable quality. That's great on your phone — but the moment you need to share, print, archive, or edit on a non-Apple device, compatibility bites. Windows doesn't open HEIC natively, most websites reject HEIC uploads, and many printers have never heard of it. Whenever a HEIC file has to leave the Apple ecosystem, convert it.
For a fuller background on the format itself, this guide to what is HEIC, and when to convert it covers the format's history, its advantages, and exactly when conversion is worth the effort.
The conversion decision table
| Your goal | Convert to | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share on social media / messaging | JPG | Universal support; small files | Slight quality loss each re-save |
| Upload to a website or CMS | JPG | Every uploader accepts it; fastest loading | Compress to ~80% quality for web |
| Edit in Photoshop / GIMP / paint tools | PNG | Lossless — no artifacts while editing | Files 3–5x larger than JPG |
| Send documents, receipts, contracts | Multi-page; everyone can open it | PDF is bigger than source HEIC | |
| Archive photos long-term | JPG (original quality) or PNG | Future-proof compatibility | Keep one HEIC original too |
| Print at home or a print shop | PNG or high-quality JPG | Best detail retention | Don't print from a low-quality JPG |
How to convert: the same 4 steps every time
Whichever target you pick, the workflow is nearly identical:
- Pick your target from the table above — decide before you start, because re-converting a JPG to PDF to PNG compounds quality loss.
- Use a converter that doesn't upload your files — browser-local tools convert on your device, so there's no upload wait and no privacy question.
- Set quality to match the goal — maximum for printing, 70–80% for web uploads, and "original" if you're archiving.
- Spot-check the output — open the result and zoom to 100%. Check for blocky gradients in skies and legibility of any text. One minute of checking beats redoing a whole batch.
Common mistakes
Converting HEIC → JPG → PNG "for better quality." Converting to PNG doesn't restore quality lost in the JPG step. Always convert from the original HEIC to your final format directly.
Using PDF for single photos meant for the web. A PDF wrapper adds overhead; a JPG is smaller, loads faster, and previews inline. Reserve PDF for multi-page documents or when layout matters.
Forgetting the original. Converted files are copies. Keep your HEIC originals somewhere safe — storage is cheap, and re-converting from the original always beats re-converting a conversion.
The short version
HEIC is a great capture format and a poor sharing format. Match the target to the job — JPG for the web, PNG for editing, PDF for documents — convert directly from the original, and you'll never waste an afternoon fixing a batch gone wrong.
