There is a moment every visitor to China has, usually at the worst possible time. You need a restroom. Badly. And you do not speak enough Chinese to ask for one, so you end up doing the thing everybody does — walking in a slow circle near a shopping bag, hoping someone notices you are asking.
Here is the thing nobody tells you. You do not need to speak Chinese to ask where something is. You need four words, and you can show them instead of saying them.
It is not a phrase problem, it is a naming problem
People think the hard part is asking the question. It is not. The hard part is naming the thing you are looking for. Ask "where is it" in perfect Mandarin and the other person still does not know what "it" is.
So the fix is not a sentence. It is a word.
For a restroom, that word is 厕所 (cèsuǒ).
For the place words that actually come up on a trip:
厕所 — restroom
地铁站 — metro station
药店 — pharmacy
超市 — supermarket
ATM or 银行 — ATM or bank
Once you have the noun, the question is the easy half, and it is the same every time:
请问厕所在哪里？ — Excuse me, where is the restroom?
Swap the noun. 请问地铁站在哪里？ Where is the metro? 请问药店在哪里？ Where is the pharmacy? Same sentence, different word.
Say it once, then show the screen
This is the part that changes everything, and it is not about your accent. Pronunciation does not matter here. Tone does not matter. What matters is that you present the whole thing at once.
Say the sentence out loud once. Then immediately open the sentence on your phone screen and hold it up.
That ordering — voice first, screen second — is deliberate. Speaking first gets their attention and signals that you are asking a person, not waving a device at them. The screen is what actually lands. A Chinese speaker can read 请问厕所在哪里 instantly, even one who has never heard a foreign accent, and reading is much faster and much less work than parsing bad pronunciation.
Your phone's camera roll, a note, a screenshot of this post — anything on the screen works. You do not need a translation app for this. You need four characters in the right order.
The reason this is worth internalizing: it is not a restroom trick. It is the general move. Naming the thing is the unlock, and it works for places, for problems, for basically any request where you can show what you mean.
When they do not know, or point vaguely
Sometimes the person you ask does not know, or points in a direction that is not a location. This is where most people give up, and it is where the screen trick has a second use.
Search the place in a maps app and show them the pin. Everyone in China has a maps app, and a pin is unambiguous in a way that a pointing gesture is not. The person you show it to will usually just confirm — 对 (duì), correct — or correct you, and either way you now know which direction to walk.
Two more things that work, in this order:
Ask at a nearby hotel or shop front desk. These are staffed by people who field this question all day, and they will hand you directions without blinking.
For a restroom specifically, go to a mall, a fast-food chain, or a metro station. These are the reliable public options, and staff in those places are used to pointing tourists at the right door.
The thirty seconds version
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
Before you leave the hotel, write 请问厕所在哪里？ once in your phone's notes. Add 地铁站, 药店, and 超市 on the next lines. That is your whole toolkit for "where is X" for an entire trip.
When you need it, say the sentence out loud, then turn the screen around.
It is not fluency. It is not even good pronunciation. It is one noun and one template, shown instead of spoken, which is a completely different skill from speaking Chinese — and it is a skill almost nobody uses.
I wrote up this exact case — the place-word list, the question template, and the fallback order when they do not know — at https://chinaunstuck.com/fix/phrases-find-restroom/
Has anyone here had a moment in China where showing a screen worked better than trying to speak? I have started doing it even when my Chinese is fine, just because it is faster.
