A recent conversation with a colleague — let's call him Lao Li — about the gap between Chinese and overseas sleep-product markets stuck with me. The gap is real, and it runs deeper than product features. At root it is about consumption habits, willingness to pay, and market maturity. The same sleep-monitoring technology meets two completely different market logics abroad and at home.
Overseas: solution output plus secondary development, already at scale
In overseas markets — CES is a good window — many customers take our solution, whose core is analyzing body-movement amplitude and sleep state, and then build their own sleep-monitoring products on top of it through secondary development, selling to their local users.
The overseas market already has real scale. Customers place a high value on sleep data, are willing to invest in turning monitoring into a product, and treat sleep monitoring as part of long-term health management rather than a one-off purchase.
China: operator projects dominate, consumer demand not yet scaled
Look back at the domestic sleep market and the picture is different. Aside from the occasional operator project, demand on the individual-user side is limited, and the market as a whole has not really taken off. In China, sleep monitoring still largely exists as project- and institution-driven demand, not yet a personal-scale consumer market.
The root cause: different consumption habits
The decisive difference is habit:
- Overseas users are often willing to pay monthly for their health. They take ownership of their own wellbeing, want to understand their sleep and improve it, and treat health management as a continuous investment. Acceptance of subscription and ongoing-service models is high.
- Chinese users — especially some older adults — more often hold the attitude of "bear it for a while, only see a doctor when you can't bear it anymore." They will buy a health product or medical device once, but are reluctant to spend a few yuan a day on health, and find continuous payment hard to accept. Their tolerance for products and their payment expectations also differ markedly from overseas users.
| Dimension | Overseas | China |
|---|---|---|
| Go-to model | Solution + secondary development | Operator / institutional projects |
| Primary buyer | Product builders, local brands | Operators, institutions |
| Payment habit | Monthly subscription accepted | One-time hardware purchase |
| View of health | Proactive, continuous | Reactive ("treat when unbearable") |
| Market maturity | Already scaled | Not yet scaled |
Conclusion: different habits and tolerance shape different demand
Because consumption habits, willingness to pay, and product tolerance differ, the form of demand differs fundamentally. Overseas markets lean toward "continuous monitoring plus subscription"; China currently leans toward "one-time hardware purchase."
So a single solution cannot win everywhere. Product form and business model must be designed per market and per population: emphasize continuous monitoring and the value of data services for overseas, and fit the one-time-hardware purchasing psychology for China.
Honest caveat: this is drawn from conversations and field observation, not a formal market study. Both markets contain exceptions and are evolving; the "bear it first" pattern describes a tendency among some users, not a universal rule.
Takeaway
- The gap between Chinese and overseas sleep markets is about habits and payment willingness, not the technology.
- Overseas: customers build on our solution and accept subscription; the market is already scaled.
- China: demand is still operator- and institution-driven; consumer demand has not yet taken off.
- Overseas users pay continuously for health; many Chinese users prefer one-time hardware and resist daily fees.
One solution does not fit both — design product and business model per market and per population.
