ReactOS has expanded its installation capabilities by adding support for NTFS disk partitions, shifting away from its long-standing FAT32 dependency.
This move is a major technical milestone for the project's compatibility goals with Windows Server 2003.
The implementation is currently in an early state, lacking support for features like journaling, caching, and filesystem security.
Developers should note that the driver is experimental.
A step towards Windows compatibility
Until recently, ReactOS required the use of the FAT32 file system for installation. NTFS support is a major milestone in the developers' goal of making the system compatible with Windows Server 2003.
What those who try it should know
Despite the progress, the new feature is still in its early stages. The development team notes that the program that manages NTFS currently does not support some basic features, such as caching, file movement logging, and additional security settings.
The project's creators warn that there may be bugs that have not yet been discovered. For this reason, caution is recommended when using the new feature.
