Quick Answer: Call the dispatcher for a live ETA and ask for the driver's name and truck number. If the wait passes the quoted time by 30 minutes with no real update, call another local company and ask for an immediate dispatch. Cancel the first only after the second confirms. If you're on a highway shoulder and feel unsafe, exit the car and call 911.
How Long Is Too Long to Wait for a Tow Truck?
Anything 30 minutes past your quoted ETA with no update is too long. Most dispatchers quote 30 to 60 minutes. Rush hour, bad weather, and storm-driven demand can push that to two hours, and a good dispatcher tells you so upfront. The problem isn't a long wait. It's silence. For typical timelines, see how long it takes for a tow truck to arrive.
Call dispatch and ask three things: where is the truck right now, what's the revised ETA, and what's the driver's name and phone number. If the answer is "he's on his way" with nothing specific, that's a stall.
Should I Cancel and Call Another Tow Company?
Yes, if the delay is real, but line up the replacement before canceling the first truck. Many tow companies stack jobs and quote optimistic times to win the call. Canceling first can leave you with no truck at all.
Do it in this order:
- Call two or three local companies and ask who can reach you in under 30 minutes. Give your exact location: highway, direction, nearest mile marker or exit.
- Get a price quote, including hookup fee and per-mile rate, before agreeing.
- Once someone confirms with a named driver, cancel the first company.
If the first company already dispatched a truck, ask whether a cancellation fee applies. Some charge one if the driver is en route, but you can usually dispute it if they were 45 minutes late.
Ask about flatbed versus wheel-lift too. All-wheel-drive and many automatic transmission cars need a flatbed, and a driver who shows up with the wrong truck means another delay. Details in how to know if your car needs a flatbed tow.
What If I Called Through AAA or My Insurance?
Call the number on your membership card or app and ask the agent to escalate the call. Roadside programs dispatch through contracted local operators, so the delay is often with the subcontractor, not the program. Ask for a case number, a revised ETA, and whether they can reassign the job to a different provider.
If they can't reassign it, ask about reimbursement. Many plans reimburse you if you hire a private tow after a documented delay, but only if you get approval first. Keep your receipt and write down the time of every call. If you're on a trip with no membership at all, this guide for road trips without AAA covers your fallback options.
What Should I Do While Waiting on the Roadside?
Get out of the car and stand well away from traffic if you're on a highway shoulder. Stay behind the guardrail, upwind of the road, and keep your eyes off the lanes so you can react. A parked car on a narrow shoulder is a hazard, and secondary collisions with disabled vehicles are a leading danger of highway breakdowns.

m the lane. - Take the keys, phone, and wallet with you.
- At night, keep your dome light off and stay outside the car on the far side of the barrier, not in the driver's seat.
- Text your exact location to someone you trust. Your phone's map pin works.
If it's dark, you have kids, or the shoulder is narrow, treat it as an emergency and call 911. Police can block a lane or arrive faster than a tow truck. More on this in whether it's safe to wait for a tow on the shoulder and what to do with kids in the car at night.
Be aware of how long you can sit there. Highway patrol may tag or tow an abandoned vehicle, which is covered in how long you can wait before police tow your car.
How Do I Avoid a Tow Scam While I'm Stressed and Stranded?
Verify the truck before you hand over keys. A driver who just "happens" to show up without a call from you is a red flag, especially near highway ramps.
Check these before anything gets hooked up:
- The company name on the truck matches the company you called.
- The driver can state your name and location without prompting.
- The quote is confirmed in writing or by text before loading.
- You know the destination shop, and it's your choice, not theirs.
Never sign a blank form. Photograph the car's condition, the truck's plate, and the driver's license or ID if they'll allow it. If someone pressures you to pay cash on the spot, refuse and ask for an itemized invoice. If you have no signal to call anyone, see what to do with no cell service on the highway.

Common Questions
Q: Can I cancel a tow truck that's already on the way?
A: Yes, but the company may charge a dispatch or cancellation fee if the truck is already en route. Call the replacement company first, confirm their ETA, then cancel and ask the first company to waive the fee because of the delay.
Q: What is a reasonable ETA for a tow truck?
A: Thirty to sixty minutes is typical in most metro areas. In rush hour, severe weather, or rural stretches, 90 minutes to two hours happens. Anything beyond the quoted time without an update is worth escalating.
Q: Should I call 911 if the tow truck is late?
A: Only if you're in danger: on a narrow highway shoulder, at night, in traffic, or with kids or a medical issue. A late tow alone isn't a 911 call, but an unsafe location is.
Q: Will my roadside plan reimburse me if I hire my own tow after a long delay?
A: Often yes, but usually only with pre-approval. Call your provider first, document the delay, get a case number, and keep your receipt before you hire anyone else.
Q: Why do tow companies quote one time and show up much later?
A: Many dispatchers stack jobs and quote optimistic times to win the call. Drivers get pulled to accidents and higher-priority calls. Ask for the driver's name and a live update rather than accepting a vague "on the way."
