When an external image result is already used or fails format validation, how can an automated workflow continue searching without exhausting rate limits or ignoring safety caps? Scheduled runs often return generic visual queries that yield thin pools of usable assets, leaving workers to handle unexpected MIME types or duplicate items.
Quick solution:
// Request next page when page 1 yields no valid assets up to the budget cap
const maxPages = 2;
if (!validAssetFound && data.next_page && currentPage < maxPages) {
currentPage++;
// execute next page fetch per https://www.pexels.com/api/documentation/
}
When should an image search inspect one more page instead of deferring immediately? An image search should inspect one more page when the initial page yields zero valid, unused candidates due to format validation failures or reuse, provided the pagination limit has not been reached. If page one returns candidates that fail JPEG content-type checks or dimension requirements, deferring immediately drops the item back into the queue without attempting recovery. Fetching a single additional page according to the official Pexels API documentation improves the probability of finding a clean raster asset while containing API costs.
How can the Worker keep result pagination bounded while preserving its two-download cap? The worker maintains a strict page ceiling and download limit. It increments the page parameter only when validation fails and a next_page URL is provided in the API payload, stopping unconditionally after page two. This design prevents infinite loops and respects concurrency thresholds. For broader context on maintaining stable publishing workflows under constraints, see Deferring Publication After A Budget Safe.
Which diagnostics explain whether a candidate failed on content type, bytes, dimensions, or reuse? Sanitized diagnostic logs record categorized rejection reasons without persisting raw URLs or headers. A candidate logs a specific MIME category violation if it serves an unexpected content type, a byte failure if the payload exceeds limits, a dimension error if the resolution is under 1600x1000, or a reuse flag if the asset was previously committed.
How do tests prove pagination stops after its configured page and download limits? Automated tests mock API responses where page one contains only invalid content types. The test suite asserts that the worker requests page two, evaluates the second payload, and halts execution immediately if page two also fails or if two download attempts are consumed.
Verification Checklist
- Verify that page one failure triggers exactly one additional page request when
next_pageis present. - Confirm that pagination stops unconditionally when the two-download cap is reached.
- Check that diagnostic logs record sanitized MIME categories without raw response headers.
- Ensure all unit tests pass with strict byte and dimension validations enforced.
Conclusion
Adding a bounded secondary page fetch to image search routines prevents unnecessary task deferrals caused by isolated format failures. By coupling strict pagination limits with sanitized diagnostics, automated pipelines maintain high reliability and steady throughput.
