Targeting a specific article revision in a automated pipeline can fail when a bounded queue scan stops before reaching the desired file. Expanding the entire search window scans unrelated drafts and relies on implicit sorting instead of explicit selection.
Quick solution:
// Accept revisionPath only in revisionOnly mode with a valid targetRef
export async function selectExactRevision(env: Env, revisionPath: string, targetRef: string): Promise<DraftRecord> {
if (!revisionPath || !targetRef) {
throw new Error("Missing required revisionPath or targetRef for exact selection.");
}
const isValidPath = /^drafts\/[a-z0-9\-_]+\.md$/.test(revisionPath);
if (!isValidPath) {
throw new Error("Provided revisionPath does not match the expected naming pattern.");
}
const draft = await env.VAULT.get(revisionPath);
if (!draft) {
throw new Error("Target revision blob not found in the current repository tree.");
}
return parseAndValidateDraft(draft, targetRef);
}
When you manage automated editorial workflows, ensuring your system inspects the correct file without opening security holes requires careful boundary enforcement. If you need to understand how Automating Medium Draft Workflows handles initial creation, selecting subsequent revisions requires a distinct validation sequence.
Validating the Caller Input and Shape
Accepting arbitrary paths from callers introduces path traversal and file injection risks. Before querying storage, validate the path against an explicit naming pattern. A safe pattern restricts the path to specific directories and safe characters, such as lowercase alphanumeric strings and hyphens ending in a markdown extension.
If the path fails this shape validation, reject the request immediately before checking storage. Never attempt to sanitize arbitrary string inputs with weak filtering rules.
Resolving Against the Current Repository Tree
Once the path passes structural validation, resolve the blob directly within the current repository tree snapshot. Trusting caller metadata without a physical check leads to phantom references and outdated processing attempts.
If the file does not exist in the current snapshot, abort the run. Do not fall back to a broader glob scan or search through historical commits, because falling back undermines the strict isolation guarantee of exact-path targeting.
Enforcing Lifecycle Status and Source References
Finding the file is only the first step. Before invoking any generation model or transformation step, inspect the front matter of the retrieved draft.
- Verify that the lifecycle status is explicitly set to needs-review or an equivalent actionable state.
- Verify that the recorded source reference matches the expected source string.
If either check fails, the workflow must halt and log a mismatch error. For more details on maintaining isolation rules during state transitions, consult the official Cloudflare Workflows rules.
Trade-Offs and Failure Modes
| Option | When to Use It | Trade-Off or Failure Mode | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounded Queue Scan | Processing daily batches of new incoming drafts sequentially. | May miss deep or older items if queue limits are reached. | Use for standard automated intake. |
| Exact Path Selection | Targeting a specific file that the standard queue window missed. | Requires knowing the exact filename and passing valid metadata. | Use only in explicit revision-only recovery modes. |
| Unconstrained Path Input | Letting callers pass any arbitrary string path for quick debugging. | Opens severe path traversal and unauthorized file access risks. | Never use; always enforce strict regex matching. |
Execution Checklist
- [ ] Confirm that path validation rejects malformed strings before storage queries run.
- [ ] Verify that exact-path selection operates only when revisionOnly mode is active.
- [ ] Ensure lifecycle status and source-reference checks execute before any model invocation.
- [ ] Test that missing files or mismatched metadata halt the workflow without expanding the queue scan.
