Every software bundle page shows you the same thing: a strikethrough price, a bigger number crossed out, a smaller number underneath. "$275 value — yours for $199." That math is always true and almost never the question you should be asking.
The question that actually predicts whether you'll use what you bought is different: do these things work together, or did someone just put a bow on five unrelated line items because a bundle converts better than five separate checkout pages?
Here's the checklist I use before buying — or before shipping — any bundle.
1. The pipeline test
Open the bundle's contents list and ask, for each item after the first: does this one need the previous one's output to be useful?
A real bundle is usually a pipeline. Item A produces something, item B consumes it, item C acts on what B produced. If you removed item A, item B would be sitting there with nothing to do.
A fake bundle is a pile. Each item solves its own unrelated problem, and the only thing connecting them is that they were priced as a group. You could own four of the five and never notice the fifth was missing.
This is the test that actually matters, and it's the one the pricing page never shows you, because "these five things don't talk to each other" doesn't sell.
2. The math test
Once you know it's a real pipeline, then check the discount — and check it the boring way: add up what each piece costs standalone, and compare that sum to the bundle price, using the seller's own individual listings, not their bundle marketing copy.
A legitimate bundle shows both numbers because both numbers are checkable. If a seller won't tell you what the pieces cost apart, that's the tell — they're hiding the comparison, not making it.
3. The teardown test
Last check: does each item in the bundle also stand on its own as something you could buy by itself, at its own price, with its own documentation? Or was the bundle built first and carved into "individual" items after the fact, purely so the bundle page has a crossed-out total to show you?
A real bundle survives being taken apart — every piece still works and still has a reason to exist alone. A fake one doesn't; pull one item out and the "individual" version feels thin, because it was never designed to be sold that way.
Applying it to something I actually sell
I run AgentKit Works, a storefront for agent skill kits, and we bundle five "workflow" kits into one package — so I ran my own checklist against my own product before writing this, which is the only honest way to use it.
Pipeline test: Prompt Ops (writes/tests prompts) feeds Skill Forge (packages prompts into reusable skills), which feeds Outreach Machine and Client Ops Autopilot (which run those skills against real work), with SEO AI & Syndication turning the output into distribution. Each one hands something to the next. Pull Prompt Ops out and Skill Forge has nothing well-tested to package — that's a real dependency, not a story.
Math test: the five kits list at $19 + $59 + $49 + $79 + $69 = $275 separately. The bundle is $199. Both numbers are on our own product pages right now, so that comparison doesn't require trusting me — go check it.
Teardown test: all five are also sold individually, each with its own page, its own price, its own docs. None of them was invented just to pad the bundle.
That's the only mention of the product in this whole piece, because the checklist is the useful part — it applies to developer tool bundles, course bundles, SaaS "growth plan" bundles, anything with a strikethrough price. Run it before the next one you're about to buy, not after.
