Perfmatters vs Asset CleanUp: Script Manager Showdown

Here is a performance truth most site owners miss: your caching plugin can be perfect and your site can still be slow — because of everything loading that should not be there. Contact Form 7's scripts on pages with no form. Slider scripts on pages with no slider. Emoji scripts, embed scripts, a dozen plugin stylesheets on every single page.

Script managers fix exactly this: they let you unload CSS and JavaScript on pages where they are not needed. The two best-known are Perfmatters and Asset CleanUp. This guide compares them honestly — what each unloads, how the interfaces differ, pricing, and which pairs best with your caching plugin.

Quick note on method: this comparison is about workflow and control, not lab benchmarks. Unloading the right assets can cut significant weight from a page — but "which scripts to unload" depends entirely on your plugins, so expect to spend time auditing your own site.

The Quick Verdict

Short on time? Here is the summary:

• Pick Perfmatters if you want the polished, actively-developed premium tool with the best interface, plus extras like delay-JS, remove-unused-CSS and lazy loading in one package.
• Pick Asset CleanUp if you want a capable free version to start with, you like its "test mode" safety net, and you prefer one-time pricing over a subscription.
• Pick neither yet if you have not audited what is actually loading — install Query Monitor or check DevTools' coverage tab first, so you know what you are trying to unload.

What Each Plugin Actually Does

Perfmatters: The Premium All-in-One Optimizer

Perfmatters (by Brian Jackson and the ForGravity team) started as a script manager and grew into a full optimization suite:

• Script Manager: disable scripts and styles per page, per post type, or sitewide — with logged-in/logged-out granularity
• Delay JavaScript execution until user interaction, and remove unused CSS
• Lazy loading for images, iframes and videos; delay/placeholder options
• Tweaks: disable emojis, embeds, dashicons for logged-out users, heartbeat control, limit post revisions, DNS prefetch/preconnect
• Database optimization and CDN rewrite for asset URLs
• Code snippets and script attributes (async/defer) management

Its philosophy: one lightweight plugin that handles all the "small but numerous" optimizations caching plugins leave behind.

Asset CleanUp: The Unloading Specialist

Asset CleanUp (by Gabriel Livan) stays focused on its core job — unloading assets — and does it with unusual depth:

• Unload CSS/JS per page, per post type, via URL patterns (regex), or sitewide with exceptions
• "Test Mode": preview unloading rules as an admin without affecting visitors — the safety net that made it famous
• Minify and combine CSS/JS files, async/defer handling
• Google Fonts optimization (combine, preload, display=swap)
• Unload on conditions: by device type, for logged-in users, on specific taxonomies
• Free version covers core unloading; Pro adds deeper rules, critical CSS, and more

Its philosophy: be the best possible tool for one job — deciding exactly what loads, where.

Feature-by-Feature Comparison

The overlap is the script manager itself; the difference is everything around it. Perfmatters bundles delay-JS and unused-CSS removal (normally cache-plugin territory), while Asset CleanUp bundles minify/combine (also normally cache-plugin territory). Know what your cache plugin already covers before doubling up.

The Real Differences (Beyond the Marketing)

1. Interface and learning curve

Perfmatters' Script Manager is widely considered the nicer interface: it lists every script and style loading on the current page, shows dependencies, and lets you toggle per-page, per-post-type or everywhere with a few clicks. Asset CleanUp's interface is more powerful in raw rule terms (regex patterns, conditional logic) but takes longer to learn. If you will touch these settings weekly, Perfmatters' polish matters. If you will set rules once and forget them, Asset CleanUp's depth wins.

2. Test mode: Asset CleanUp's killer feature

Unloading the wrong script breaks things — a missing cart script, a dead menu, a form that silently stops submitting. Asset CleanUp's test mode lets you apply unloading rules visible only to logged-in admins, so you can click through the whole site safely before visitors ever see the change. Perfmatters has no equivalent; you test by toggling and checking as a logged-out visitor (which works, but test mode is more forgiving).

3. Overlap with your cache plugin

This is where people waste money or create conflicts:

• Perfmatters + WP Rocket/FlyingPress: Perfmatters' delay-JS and remove-unused-CSS overlap with both cache plugins' versions of the same features. Pick ONE plugin to own each feature — running two delay-JS implementations is asking for breakage.
• Asset CleanUp + cache plugin: Asset CleanUp's minify/combine overlaps with cache plugins too. The cleanest setup is usually: cache plugin handles page caching + minify, while Asset CleanUp handles only unloading (disable its minify module to avoid double-processing).
• Rule of thumb: let each plugin do what it does best, and switch off the overlapping modules.

4. Pricing philosophy

Perfmatters is an annual subscription — you pay every year for updates and support. Asset CleanUp has a genuinely useful free version, and its Pro has historically been a one-time payment. If you dislike subscriptions or want to try before you buy, Asset CleanUp's path is friendlier. If you value continuous active development and premium support, Perfmatters' subscription funds exactly that.

5. What "unloading" can and cannot do

Both plugins only help with assets that should not load at all on a given page. They cannot fix a genuinely heavy script that a page needs (a chat widget, a page-builder's core files). For those, the fixes are: delay it, defer it, replace it with something lighter, or remove the feature. Unloading is about the easy wins — the contact-form scripts on 95% of pages that have no form.

How to Audit Before You Buy Either

1. Install Query Monitor (free) and load a few key pages — it shows which scripts and styles each page pulls in.
2. In Chrome DevTools, open Coverage (Ctrl+Shift+P → "Show Coverage"), reload, and see how much of each file actually executes. Red bars everywhere = unloading candidates.
3. List the obvious wins: form plugins on non-form pages, slider assets without sliders, social-share scripts, emoji/embed scripts.
4. Only then choose your tool — you will configure it in an afternoon instead of guessing for a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Perfmatters and Asset CleanUp together?

Technically yes, but do not — two script managers will fight over the same assets and create confusing breakage. Pick one. (One script manager plus one caching plugin is the normal, correct stack.)

Will unloading scripts break my site?

It can, if you unload something a page actually needs. That is why Asset CleanUp has test mode, and why the universal rule applies: change one thing, test as a logged-out visitor, click everything — menus, forms, cart, search — before moving on.

Do I still need a caching plugin if I use Perfmatters?

Yes. Perfmatters is not a page-caching plugin — it optimizes what loads, but it does not cache full HTML pages. The standard stack is: caching plugin (page cache) + Perfmatters or Asset CleanUp (asset control) + image optimizer.

Which is better for beginners?

Perfmatters has the gentler learning curve and better documentation. Asset CleanUp's free version is the better zero-risk starting point, and its test mode forgives mistakes. Either is fine if you follow the "small batches + test" rule.

Does unloading assets help Core Web Vitals?

Yes — fewer, smaller files mean less render-blocking work and faster interactivity (INP), and less JavaScript parsing helps on mobile especially. But it complements, not replaces, caching, image optimization and good hosting.

The Bottom Line

Perfmatters is the premium all-rounder: the nicest script manager plus delay-JS, unused-CSS removal and a dozen small optimizations in one subscription. Asset CleanUp is the specialist with the better free tier, the beloved test mode, and one-time pricing. Either one, configured carefully, removes the dead weight your caching plugin cannot touch — just never run both at once, and always let one plugin own each overlapping feature.
