An overview of home networking hardware fundamentals, covering how modems translate line signals, fiber connections use ONTs, and routers manage local traffic.
Learn how stock ISP gateway equipment compares to dedicated personal routers and how bridge mode configurations impact local network setups.
What does each one do individually?
The basic internet connection depends on a modem. This device is responsible for translating the signals coming from the telephone line or cable into digital form and connecting to the internet. In fiber optic connections, the modem is replaced by a special termination device.
On the other hand, the router takes the data from the modem and distributes it to the individual devices in the home, whether connected wirelessly or by cable, while also directing the data exchanged between the devices in the home.
In many cases, internet service providers provide a device that combines both functions in a single box. This basic equipment often lacks the latest wireless standards or whole-home signal boosting capabilities.

The solution for your own equipment
Some providers offer upgraded packages with top-of-the-line wireless equipment and additional signal boosters for an additional monthly fee, such as AT&T's All-Fi Pro plan, which costs $25 per month.
However, purchasing a personal router and setting your provider's equipment to bridging mode can help you save money on equipment rental costs.
