Top 3 IoT Security Best Practices (Crucial for 2026)
Security is often overlooked in student and prototype projects. Adding these basic security measures will elevate your project to an engineering standard:
-
Secure Communication (TLS/SSL Encryption): Never send plain HTTP or unencrypted MQTT payloads over Wi-Fi. Always use
MQTTS(Port 8883) with SSL certificates. - Device Authentication & Tokens: Use unique API Keys, JWT Tokens, or X.509 Certificates per hardware node instead of hardcoding plain credentials.
- Over-The-Air (OTA) Firmware Updates: Integrate OTA update capabilities (using ESP32 OTA or KiwiSIoT Cloud OTA) so you can patch security vulnerabilities remotely without physical access to hardware.
