Blown Head Gasket Symptoms: Should I Tow or Drive?: Roadside Tips

> **Quick Answer:** Do not drive on a blown head gasket. Stop the car as soon as it is safe to do so. Driving even a few miles with a blown head gasket can warp or crack your cylinder head, turning a $1,500 repair into a $4,000 engine rebuild. Call a tow truck. The symptoms to watch for are white smoke from the exhaust, coolant loss with no visible leak, milky oil on the dipstick, and a temperature gauge climbing into the red.

## How Do I Know If I Have a Blown Head Gasket Right Now?

The most obvious signs are white or sweet-smelling steam from the exhaust pipe, your temperature gauge rising fast, and coolant disappearing from the reservoir without any puddle under the car. Pull the oil dipstick and look at it closely. If the oil looks like a chocolate milkshake or has a tan, foamy film on the underside of the cap, coolant is mixing with your oil. That is a blown head gasket until proven otherwise.

Other symptoms include bubbling in the coolant reservoir while the engine is running (combustion gases pushing into the cooling system), rough idle, and white residue around the exhaust pipe. Some cars also throw a P0301-type misfire code alongside an overheating condition. You do not need all of these symptoms at once. White exhaust steam plus a rising temp gauge is enough to stop driving immediately.

If you are seeing smoke coming from under the hood in addition to the exhaust, that is a separate problem compounding the risk. Check out [what to do when you have smoke coming from under the hood while driving](/smoke-coming-from-under-hood-while-driving-what-to-do/) for immediate steps before you even think about moving the car.

## Can I Drive Even a Short Distance to a Shop or Home?

No. Short-distance driving is what kills engines in this situation. The head gasket seals combustion pressure inside the cylinder and keeps coolant and oil in their separate passages. Once that seal fails, your engine loses its ability to regulate temperature. The coolant that should be cooling your cylinder head is now leaking into the combustion chamber or mixing with oil, which means neither system is doing its job.

Even a two-mile drive at this point can generate enough heat to warp the aluminum cylinder head. A warped head requires machining or full replacement. If you keep going after that, you risk a cracked block, which is a total engine replacement. The repair bill escalates at every mile. The only exception: if your car is currently cool, you have just noticed the symptoms parked at home, and the shop is literally around the corner. Even then, watch the temp gauge every 30 seconds and pull over the moment it moves above normal.

## What Should I Do Right Now If I Suspect a Blown Head Gasket?

Pull over safely, turn off the engine, and leave it off. Do not add coolant to a hot engine. Do not open the radiator cap. Pressurized coolant can boil and cause severe burns. Let the engine cool for at least 45 minutes to an hour before you touch anything.

Once it is cool, you can check the oil cap and dipstick for that milky residue. If you see it, you have your answer. Call a tow truck and have the car brought to a shop. Request a flatbed if the car is front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. A flatbed is the right call for a car that should not be running at all. If you are unsure whether your car needs a flatbed specifically, [this breakdown of when a flatbed is required](/how-do-i-know-if-my-car-needs-a-flatbed-tow/) will he

lp you make the right call.

Do not attempt to drive to "just see how far I get." That is how a $1,500 head gasket job becomes a $5,000 engine swap.

## What Does This Repair Actually Cost, and Is the Car Worth Fixing?

A head gasket replacement typically runs $1,200 to $2,500 depending on the make, model, and labor rates in your area. A Subaru EJ25 engine, notorious for head gasket failures, often runs toward the higher end because the engine must come out. A simpler inline-four in a Honda Civic is less labor-intensive and sits at the lower end.

If your head was already warped before the car got towed, add $300 to $600 for cylinder head resurfacing. If the head is cracked, you are looking at a new or remanufactured head, which adds $500 to $1,500 on top. The longer the car ran hot, the worse those numbers get. Get the car assessed before spending anything. Some older, high-mileage vehicles are not worth the repair at all. An honest shop will tell you upfront.

## Common Questions

**Q: Can I use a head gasket sealer product to fix this myself?**
A: Products like Bar's Leaks Head Gasket Fix can temporarily seal small, pinhole-type leaks and buy time on an older vehicle not worth a full repair. They will not fix a major failure, and they can clog heater cores and radiator passages. Use them only as a last resort on a car you are trying to nurse to a shop, not as a real repair.

**Q: My temperature gauge spiked once and then came back to normal. Is that a blown head gasket?**
A: It could be, but a single spike also points to a failing thermostat, a low coolant level, or a stuck cooling fan. Check your coolant level and oil condition first. If the oil is clean and coolant level is normal, a thermostat is more likely. If the gauge keeps spiking or the oil looks milky, assume head gasket and stop driving.

**Q: Will my car insurance or roadside assistance cover the tow for a blown head gasket?**
A: Roadside assistance through AAA or your insurer will typically cover the tow itself, often for free up to a set mileage limit. The repair bill is on you. Mechanical breakdown insurance (a separate product from standard auto insurance) may cover some repair costs depending on your policy.

**Q: How long can I leave my car on the side of the road while waiting for a tow?**
A: That depends on where you are and local ordinances. On a highway shoulder, most states give you one to two hours before law enforcement can authorize a tow at your expense. Get off the roadway if possible, turn on your hazards, and get your tow dispatched fast. [Here is a full breakdown of how long you can legally wait on the side of the road.](/how-long-can-you-wait-on-side-of-road-before-police-tow-your-car/)

**Q: My engine is making a knocking sound along with the overheating. Is that related?**
A: Yes, and it is bad. A knock alongside overheating means oil lubrication is failing, likely because coolant has contaminated the oil and broken down its viscosity. Bearings and cylinder walls are being damaged right now if the engine is running. Shut it off immediately. This is now a potential engine replacement situation, not just a head gasket job.
