Everyone in technology claims to be data-driven, until the data contradicts the executive growth narrative.
Founders display cherry-picked charts of cumulative signups; investors applaud upward curves. But when I enter an organization to perform forensic platform diligence, I routinely find that observability has collapsed under its own weight.
Engineering teams are bombarded with thousands of uncalibrated alerts every week. Alert fatigue is so pervasive that critical catastrophic warnings are muted in Slack channels.
When true operational failure strikes, the observability stack (which was supposed to be a lighthouse) becomes a blinding blizzard of disconnected data points.
Omniscience through metric volume is an illusion.
Resilience requires high-signal telemetry: pruning 90% of vanity metrics, focusing exclusively on golden signals (latency, traffic, errors, saturation), and establishing clear correlation between system health and customer business outcomes.
Key Takeaways & Architectural FAQs
Q: Why can more monitoring data actually make an outage worse?
Thousands of uncalibrated alerts create fatigue, so critical warnings get muted alongside noise in Slack channels. When a real failure strikes, the observability stack meant to be a lighthouse becomes a blinding blizzard of disconnected data points.
Q: How do you fix an observability stack that has collapsed under its own alert volume?
Prune roughly 90% of vanity metrics and focus exclusively on the golden signals (latency, traffic, errors, saturation), with a clear correlation between system health metrics and actual customer business outcomes.
