AI features in ecommerce are often introduced as a model problem: choose a model, connect an API, render the result. In a customer-facing product, the surrounding flow matters just as much. A shopper needs to understand why an image is requested, what happens while the system works, what the result means, and how to return to the original product.
I’m building Trylume, a photo-based virtual try-on experience for fashion ecommerce. A shopper starts from a product page and uses a personal photo to create a garment preview. Working on this product has made me think about the integration as a sequence of trust decisions rather than a single image-generation call.
- Explain the input before requesting it A file picker with no context creates uncertainty. Tell users what kind of image is useful and what the feature will do with it. Keep the explanation close to the upload control, not hidden in a distant policy page. Be clear about what the generated preview can and cannot tell them. For clothing, a visual preview should not be presented as a size or fit guarantee. Product measurements and size guidance still matter.
- Treat loading and failure states as part of the product Image processing is not instant. The interface should show that work is happening, avoid duplicate submissions, and explain what a user can do if generation fails. If there is a retry, give it a clear label. If the system is still processing, do not leave the shopper wondering whether the click worked. A useful failure state should preserve the product context. The customer should not lose the item they were considering or be forced to restart the whole store session.
- Keep the result connected to the source product A generated preview is most useful when the shopper can confirm which garment and variant they selected. The experience should provide a path back to product details, color selection, size information, and checkout. Otherwise the feature can feel like a separate image generator rather than part of shopping.
- Minimize the data path Before launch, map what is sent to the store, the application, the model provider, and storage. Decide which images need to persist and for how long. Make the public explanation match the actual implementation, including failure cases, backups, and third-party processing. Never use a privacy promise just because it sounds reassuring.
- Measure the whole funnel Track more than successful generations. Useful events include the feature being shown, opened, upload started, upload accepted, result completed, retry or failure, return to product details, add-to-cart, and purchase. Compare against a baseline and remember that a try-on interaction alone does not prove additional revenue. The lesson for me is that AI output quality is only one part of the experience. Trust, recovery, privacy, and the path back to shopping all affect whether a customer will use the feature again. I’m continuing to test Trylume with real product images and want feedback from developers who have built image-upload workflows: what edge case did you wish you had tested earlier? https://trylume.tech/
