Prisma 8 vs Drizzle in 2026: Which ORM Should You Choose?

Every Prisma-vs-Drizzle comparison you have read is now wrong. Not slightly
outdated - wrong about the central facts it argues from. Prisma 8 threw out
the Rust query engine, the generated client, and prisma generate itself,
which means nearly every "pick Drizzle because" argument from the last three
years points at a Prisma that no longer exists. I spent this week reading the
actual release notes, the migration docs, and both changelogs so you do not
have to. Here is which old argument died, which one survived, and how I
would actually choose between them for a new project today.

The short answer

Prisma 8's pure-TypeScript rewrite kills the three classic anti-Prisma
arguments: no Rust engine means edge deploys work, bundles shrank to a
148.5 KB gzipped claim, and engine crashes are structurally gone. But Prisma
8 is still a release candidate missing $extends and nested writes. For a
new Postgres project today, I would pick stable Drizzle unless your team
wants Prisma's higher-level DX and can wait for general availability.

What Prisma 8 actually changed

Forget the marketing. Here is the concrete list, all verified against
Prisma's own docs and release notes from this month:

The architecture changed completely. schema.prisma is replaced by a
contract file (marked // use prisma-8), and the build artifacts are
contract.json plus contract.d.ts - no generated client directory, no
prisma generate step, no binaryTargets to configure. Queries go straight
through the pg driver, which is why entire categories of old Prisma errors
("Engine is not yet connected", engine segfaults in Vitest, binary download
failures on Apple Silicon) cannot physically happen anymore. Prisma closed
330 long-standing issues in one release, many of them fixed precisely
because the code that caused them no longer exists.

The query API changed shape too: .take() and .skip() became .limit()
and .offset(), Postgres date columns now return Temporal values or strings
instead of JavaScript Date objects, and count() returns a bigint. These
are mechanical changes, but the Temporal one will touch more of your code
than you expect.

Two warnings before you get excited. First, Prisma 8 is a release
candidate, not GA - Prisma's own release status page says general
availability is expected in October 2026, and until then API details can
still move. The RC is missing $extends, JSON column filtering, atomic
increment, most nested writes, transaction isolation levels, and the
P2002-style error codes. Second, npm install prisma currently resolves
the latest tag to the 8.0.0 release candidate, not the stable 7 line. If
you scaffold today without pinning, you will build on an RC by accident.
Pin prisma@7 for anything going to production this month.

Run npm view prisma dist-tags.latest right now on any machine and you get
8.0.0-rc.x - a release candidate. Prisma 7.10 is the stable line. I have
seen this exact mistake (scaffolding on latest, hitting missing commands
like prisma generate, filing confused issues) play out in public three
times this month. Pin your major version explicitly.

The four old arguments: dead or alive

This is the part every existing comparison gets wrong. Let me take the four
arguments I have seen repeated for years and check each one against Prisma 8
as it actually ships.

1. "Prisma can't run on the edge" - dead

Drizzle still runs on the edge, obviously - it always did. But "runs on the
edge" stopped being a differentiator. If edge deployment was your reason to
pick Drizzle, you now need a different reason.

2. "Prisma's bundle is enormous" - weakened, not dead

Prisma's own number is 148.5 KB gzipped. Drizzle is ~8.3 KB. That is still
roughly an 18x gap, and on a cold serverless function, 140 KB of extra parse
time is real. Drizzle wins this round.

But context matters. The old argument was about 8-10 MB native binaries
that broke deployments. Going from megabytes to 148 KB killed the
deployment-breaking version of this complaint. What remains is a cold-start
optimization argument, and it only matters if you deploy to environments
where every kilobyte counts. For a standard Node server or container, I
stopped caring about this gap two paragraphs ago. For edge functions, I
still would.

3. "Prisma is slow" - weakened

Prisma claims ~90% of the raw pg driver's peak throughput. That is a
vendor benchmark, and I treat all vendor benchmarks as marketing until an
independent party reproduces them. But the architecture behind the claim is
real: the old engine round-trip that made Prisma measurably slower than
hand-written SQL is gone, because there is no engine anymore. Queries go
through the same pg driver Drizzle uses.

The honest state of play: nobody has published a serious independent
Prisma 8 vs Drizzle benchmark yet. For typical web app queries, I expect the
difference to land in the noise. Pick on other criteria.

4. "Drizzle might not survive" - dead

In March 2026, PlanetScale announced the Drizzle team was joining the
company, with core maintainers hired full-time and the project staying open
source. The "unfunded open-source risk" argument - genuinely the strongest
non-technical reason to pick Prisma - is over.

The counterweight worth knowing: Drizzle's roadmap now sits inside a
database vendor with commercial interests. Nothing in the announcement
suggests a direction change, and PlanetScale's incentive is a healthy,
portable ORM. But it is a different governance model than before, and you
should know which one you are adopting.

The new arguments nobody is making yet

Killing old arguments is only half the job. Here is what the new landscape
actually looks like - the points I have not seen in any comparison post.

Prisma 8 being an RC is now the strongest argument for Drizzle.
Not the bundle, not the speed - the maturity gap. Drizzle's stable line is
0.45.x and boring in the best way. Prisma 8 is still accumulating breaking
changes with missing features. If you are choosing this month, "stable beats
shiny" is a legitimate engineering call, and it favors Drizzle for reasons
that have nothing to do with the old debate.

Your database may decide for you. Prisma 8 supports Postgres (RC),
MongoDB (early access), and SQLite (experimental). MySQL, SQL Server, and
CockroachDB are "coming later." Drizzle supports all of them today, plus
Neon, Turso, PlanetScale, and Cloudflare D1. On MySQL, this comparison is
over before it starts.

The migration path is a rewrite, not an upgrade. Prisma 8 has no
@prisma/client, a new contract format, and new commands. Prisma 7 stays
supported for 18 months after GA, and 7.10 ships a compatibility package so
both can coexist during migration. If you have a working Prisma 7 app, there
is no urgency - and anyone telling you to rewrite it this month is selling
something. (I wrote about running a calm, planned migration for a different
breaking change recently - the same "plan it, don't rush it" logic applies:
my Next.js 16.4 migration guide.)

Head-to-head: October 2026

How I would actually choose

Enough tables. Here is my judgment, scenario by scenario - the part where I
stop summarizing and start opining.

New Postgres project, team comfortable with SQL, deploying serverless or
edge: Drizzle. It is stable, tiny, and you see every query it generates.
The old reasons to hesitate (maintenance risk) are gone. This is the easiest
call on the list.

New Postgres project, team without deep SQL experience, standard server
deploy: Prisma 8 at GA, Prisma 7 today. Prisma's higher-level API and
Prisma Studio are genuinely better for teams that think in models rather
than joins. I would start on 7 now and plan the 8 migration for next
quarter - the compatibility package makes that boring instead of scary.

MySQL or CockroachDB: Drizzle, no contest. Prisma 8 does not support
your database yet. Revisit in 2027.

You need $extends, complex nested writes, or specific isolation levels
today: not Prisma 8. The RC does not have them. Prisma 7 or Drizzle,
depending on the rows above.

Existing Prisma 7 app: do nothing. You have 18 months of support after
GA. The rewrite can wait for the RC to settle and the ecosystem (extensions,
guides, Stack Overflow answers) to catch up. Early adoption is a hobby;
production is a job.

The meta-point: the debate moved from "Drizzle is the lightweight rebel vs
Prisma the heavy incumbent" to a much more boring and much more useful
question - do you want stability and SQL control today, or Prisma's
higher-level DX once the RC lands? Boring questions have better answers.

What to do this week

If you are choosing an ORM for something real, here is the checklist I
would run through before writing a line of schema:

Decide the major version before you install. prisma@7 for production
today, drizzle-orm pinned to 0.45.x for stable Drizzle. Never let latest
decide for you - right now latest means a release candidate.

Postgres: fine. MongoDB: early access, no transactions yet. MySQL,
CockroachDB, SQL Server: not supported - pick Drizzle or wait.

Be honest about this one. A team that reads SQL fluently gets more from
Drizzle's transparency. A team that does not will ship faster with Prisma's
abstraction. There is no shame in either answer; there is shame in picking
Drizzle and then fighting the query builder for a month.

Build a spike, not the foundation. Read the release status page for what is
still missing, and check whether any missing piece ($extends, nested
writes, isolation levels) is load-bearing for your app before committing.

FAQ

Should I migrate my Prisma 7 app to Prisma 8 now?

No. Prisma 8 is still a release candidate with API churn and missing
features like $extends, nested writes, and transaction isolation levels.
Prisma 7 gets bug fixes and security updates for 18 months after Prisma 8
reaches GA. Pin prisma@7 in package.json (npm's latest tag currently
resolves to the 8 RC) and plan the migration for after general
availability.

Is Prisma 8 faster than Drizzle?

Prisma's own benchmarks claim ~90% of raw pg driver throughput with a
148.5 KB gzipped bundle, but that is a vendor number and independent
benchmarks have not caught up yet. Drizzle remains a thinner layer over SQL
with a ~8.3 KB bundle. For typical web app queries the difference is
unlikely to decide anything; bundle size and cold starts matter more than
raw query speed for most teams.

Does Prisma 8 work with MySQL?

Not yet. Prisma 8 supports PostgreSQL (release candidate), MongoDB (early
access), and SQLite (experimental). MySQL, SQL Server, and CockroachDB are
listed as coming later. If your database is MySQL, Drizzle supports it
today and the comparison is over before it starts.

What happened to prisma generate?

It is gone in Prisma 8. There is no code generation step and no
binaryTargets: the contract file (contract.json plus contract.d.ts)
replaces schema.prisma and the generated client. Queries go straight
through the pg driver, which is also why whole classes of old errors like
"Engine is not yet connected" cannot occur anymore.

Is Drizzle still maintained in 2026?

Yes. In March 2026 PlanetScale announced the Drizzle team was joining the
company, with core maintainers hired full-time and the project staying open
source. The old "unfunded project" risk argument is dead. The honest
caveat is governance: the roadmap now sits inside a database vendor, which
is worth knowing but not worth fearing.

Which ORM should a beginner learn first?

If you know SQL, Drizzle teaches you nothing you do not already know - its
API mirrors SQL directly. (Drizzle even generates Zod schemas from your
tables, which pairs nicely with the contract-style validation I wrote about
in Zod as a Contract.) If you do not know SQL yet, Prisma's higher-level
API lets you ship without learning joins first, but you will eventually
need the SQL anyway. I would learn Drizzle if SQL comfort is the goal,
Prisma if shipping speed on a team without SQL experience is the goal.

Choosing a data layer for a real project? This is exactly the kind of
decision I help teams get right - which ORM, which database, and what the
migration actually costs before you commit. Get in touch and
tell me about your stack. I take on a small number of builds at a time, and
I answer every serious inquiry personally.
