As a developer, I spend my weeks building software with too many features. As a parent, I spend my weekends grateful for software with almost none.
A few months ago I started a small ritual with my kids: Saturday morning, we pick a theme, print a stack of coloring pages, and the tablets stay in the drawer until lunch. No app to manage, no accounts, no "one more episode" negotiations. Just paper and crayons.
The tool that made it stick is almost comically simple. DoodleSprout is a free website that turns a text prompt or a photo into a printable coloring page. That is the whole product. And it is exactly enough.
Why simple wins with kids' tools
We have a bias in this industry toward adding: more modes, more sharing, more gamification. Kids' products get it worst — every children's app seems designed to maximize session length rather than serve the actual goal.
A coloring page generator inverts that. Its job is to get out of the way as fast as possible: prompt in, printable page out, done. The "engagement" happens offline, at the kitchen table, which is where you wanted your kids anyway.
I have started judging kids' tools by a metric I call time-to-table: how many seconds from "I want to do the activity" to the activity actually starting. Anything over two minutes and you have lost a five-year-old. DoodleSprout's time-to-table is under sixty seconds. Most apps I have tried are three to five minutes of onboarding, permissions, and tutorial overlays before a child colors a single line.
The ritual, concretely
For anyone who wants to steal it:
- Friday night: ask each kid for a theme. Write the prompts down — "a dragon guarding a castle," "an astronaut cat." Kids' prompts are better than anything you would invent.
- Saturday 9am: generate and print while breakfast cooks. I do 4-5 pages per kid; running out mid-morning kills the momentum.
- The rule: tablets stay docked until the coloring stack is done or lunch arrives, whichever comes first. No exceptions, including for me.
- The gallery: finished pages go on the fridge immediately. Not later. The ceremony of hanging it up is half the reward.
The themed collections help when the kids cannot decide — the free printable coloring pages section has dinosaurs, space, animals, and seasonal stuff ready to go, which covers about 90% of Saturday mornings.
What I took back to work
Building for kids taught me something I keep applying to my day job: the best tool is often the one with the fewest decisions. Every option you add is a chance for the user to stall. A text box, a button, and a print dialog beat a dashboard every time when the user's goal is simple.
My kids do not know what a "delightful user experience" is. They know whether the crayons are out in under a minute. Ship for that.
