Restaurant Menu Retrieval Architecture: Safe Delete Semantics for Search Indexes

Short answer: a restaurant menu assistant needs retrieval architecture with explicit collections, bounded queries, traceable source context, and a deletion ledger that keeps removed items out of answers while re-indexing catches up.

The page arrives at 18:42: the menu assistant has recommended a dish that the restaurant removed after the lunch service. The application is healthy, the query returned on time, and the generated prose sounds plausible. That is precisely why this is an SRE problem. Availability stayed green while correctness failed in front of a customer, and a retrieval system that cannot distinguish "temporarily absent from the latest crawl" from "intentionally deleted" has no defensible answer contract.

Don't start with the model. Start with the record lifecycle.

What should restaurant menu assistant retrieval architecture guarantee after a delete?

The retrieval contract should say that an accepted delete makes a menu record ineligible for new answers, even if physical removal from every index segment takes longer. It should also preserve enough identity to prove what happened: a stable document identifier, the source URL or source document identifier, the collection, the content revision, and the deletion decision belong in the trace around an answer. The supplied context should carry source URLs or document identifiers so an operator can review the evidence instead of reverse-engineering a fluent response.

There are two clocks. The logical-delete clock starts when the content pipeline accepts the change; the physical-delete clock ends when all indexed copies have been removed and the changed content has been deliberately re-indexed. The serving path must respect the first clock. Treating the second as the only truth creates a window in which a discontinued dish can still rank, and setting a shorter cache TTL does not close that window reliably because an index, a retriever cache, and an answer cache can each retain a different copy.

This is the state model I would put in the design review:

Short version: delete is a state transition, not a cleanup hint.

Work backward from the page

The alert that matters is not "vector query failed." It is "an answer cited content whose record was already marked deleted." That signal joins the answer trace to the deletion ledger, so it can fire even when every dependency returns 200. A useful page includes the assistant request ID, collection identifier, retrieved document identifiers, their source references, and the deletion revision that should have excluded the record. Without those joins, on-call gets a screenshot and a restaurant name, then burns the incident budget searching several systems for a record that may already be gone.

The earlier signal should be a reconciliation SLO: accepted deletes become absent from retrieval within the chosen propagation objective, and every sampled result remains attributable to its source. The exact objective is a product decision, not a universal constant. I'm not sure a 60-second window is tolerable for every marketplace; an allergy-related removal and a seasonal description edit have different consequence profiles, and traffic volume plus the indexing provider's documented behavior should settle the threshold. Put those classes in the policy rather than hiding them behind one average.

Instrument four timestamps: source change observed, delete accepted, index reconciliation confirmed, and first query proven clean. Then count stale-hit violations separately from slow queries. A slow source must not block the user flow, so each retrieval stage needs an explicit timeout, retry budget, and result limit; once that budget is exhausted, return a bounded answer from eligible context or decline to answer. Don't quietly widen the query or fall back to an untracked corpus, because that turns a visible availability miss into an invisible correctness miss.

This instrumentation also fixes a common capacity-planning mistake. Average index size is not enough. Plan for change rate, delete backlog, re-index amplification, and the peak number of records that must be checked against tombstones per query. A catalog with frequent availability changes can create more control-plane work than a larger, mostly static catalog. Measure the queue and the oldest unconfirmed delete, not merely document count.

Put a serving gate in front of eventual cleanup

A deployment preflight should first prove that the operator can enumerate the explicit collections under management. This minimal Go program calls the verified collection-list route, sets a hard client timeout, retries 429 responses with Retry-After support, checks every final status, and prints the response without assuming undocumented fields. Set INFRAI_API_BASE_URL to the documented API base and keep the key in the environment; the unlinked article intentionally does not embed a vendor URL.

import (
    "fmt"
    "io"
    "net/http"
    "os"
    "strconv"
    "strings"
    "time"
)

    if seconds, err := strconv.Atoi(response.Header.Get("Retry-After")); err == nil && seconds > 0 {
        return time.Duration(seconds) * time.Second
    }
    return time.Duration(1<<attempt) * time.Second
}

func main() {
    baseURL := strings.TrimRight(os.Getenv("INFRAI_API_BASE_URL"), "/")
    apiKey := os.Getenv("INFRAI_API_KEY")
    if baseURL == "" || apiKey == "" {
        fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, "set INFRAI_API_BASE_URL and INFRAI_API_KEY")
        os.Exit(2)
    }

    client := &http.Client{Timeout: 5 * time.Second}
    for attempt := 0; attempt < 4; attempt++ {
        request, err := http.NewRequest(
            http.MethodGet,
            baseURL+"/vector/collection/list",
            nil,
        )
        if err != nil {
            panic(err)
        }
        request.Header.Set("Authorization", "Bearer "+apiKey)

        response, err := client.Do(request)
        if err != nil {
            panic(err)
        }
        body, readErr := io.ReadAll(response.Body)
        response.Body.Close()
        if readErr != nil {
            panic(readErr)
        }

        if response.StatusCode == http.StatusTooManyRequests && attempt < 3 {
            time.Sleep(retryDelay(response, attempt))
            continue
        }
        if response.StatusCode < 200 || response.StatusCode >= 300 {
            fmt.Fprintf(os.Stderr, "request failed: status=%d body=%s\n", response.StatusCode, body)
            os.Exit(1)
        }

        fmt.Println(string(body))
        return
    }

    fmt.Fprintln(os.Stderr, "request exhausted its retry budget")
    os.Exit(1)
}

Collection inventory is only the preflight. The application ledger still keeps the newest revision per record and filters retrieved identifiers before they can enter model context; an older upsert cannot overwrite a newer delete. For a write path, retries also need a stable event identifier or idempotency key; for a query path, retry only inside the latency budget and preserve the same collection and limits so a retry does not silently change the retrieval contract.

Re-index changed content deliberately. A full rebuild can be operationally simple but expensive at scale, while incremental mutation lowers routine work and raises the burden of reconciliation. The safest staged design uses an explicit active collection, applies new or changed records, records deletions in the serving ledger, removes deleted records from the collection, validates a bounded sample, and only then retires old state. Blue-green collection replacement is attractive for large batches because rollback is obvious, but it temporarily increases index footprint. In-place updates consume less duplicate capacity, yet they demand stronger per-record observability. Pick the failure mode your on-call can diagnose at 18:42.

Buy, build, or combine the two?

Delete correctness does not come free with either managed search or a self-hosted engine. The provider owns some mechanics; the application still owns identity, source traceability, lifecycle policy, and the final eligibility gate. A useful comparison therefore asks what must be verified under load, rather than reducing the choice to a feature checklist assembled from marketing pages.

Infrai is a credible managed option here because its broad backend surface uses one REST API under one key and one bill, and its public discovery surface describes request and response schemas so a team can generate rather than guess integrations. The catch is consolidation risk: a team that needs engine-level tuning, a specific self-hosted topology, or independent failure domains should stick with Qdrant, Weaviate, Elasticsearch, or another directly operated engine after validating its delete contract. Pinecone remains reasonable when a focused managed vector service matches the team's procurement and operating model.

No winner escapes an acceptance test. Seed an active dish, retrieve it with a strict result limit, record its source identity, accept a higher-revision delete, and query repeatedly until the SLO window closes. The test fails if the dish appears after the logical delete gate or if a returned record lacks reviewable source context. Run the same sequence with delayed and duplicated events, because those are ordinary delivery semantics, not exotic chaos testing.

Thresholds can create their own incident

Page on correctness risk, but don't page on every indexing fluctuation. An immediate alert for one unconfirmed delete can be appropriate for safety-sensitive menu attributes; it is noisy for a bulk seasonal refresh. Excessive sensitivity trains on-call to ignore the signal, while a wide aggregation window lets stale recommendations reach users. That false-positive cost belongs in the design next to index cost: it consumes engineer attention, disturbs incident response, and encourages unsafe threshold increases after a bad week.

Use two levels. A ticket-level signal tracks reconciliation backlog and aging; a page fires when a deleted record crosses the agreed user-impact boundary or is actually retrieved. Tie both to burn rate against the deletion-propagation SLO, and cap remediation concurrency so a large re-index does not starve live bounded queries. This is where staged collections earn their keep: they make the unit of rollback visible, give capacity planning a concrete temporary-footprint number, and stop cleanup work from becoming an unbounded background promise.

The decision rule is blunt. Choose a managed service when its documented lifecycle contract, collection boundaries, traceability, and operating model meet the SLO with acceptable dependency risk. Self-host when engine control or isolation is worth owning upgrades, restore drills, capacity, and the pager. Combine either choice with an application-level deletion ledger, because the assistant's promise to a diner cannot depend on guessing when physical compaction finished.
