Walking down the supplement aisle — or scrolling through an online shop — you are met with bold claims: "supports immunity", "clinically studied ingredients", "maximum strength". The front of the bottle is marketing. The back of the bottle is where the facts live. Learning to read that small print is the single most useful skill a supplement buyer can develop.
At The Supplement Rating, we rate supplements on transparency, evidence quality and manufacturing standards, and our reviews always start with the same ritual: ignoring the front label and going straight to the panel on the back. Here are the five transparency checks we run every time.
1. Make sure the facts panel is actually complete
A legitimate product carries a Supplement Facts panel (called nutrition information on products sold in the UK and EU) listing every active ingredient with its amount per serving. If a product hides behind a brand name and a list of vague ingredient names with no amounts, that is a red flag. You cannot judge value or safety without knowing what — and how much — you are taking.
Familiarise yourself with the serving information at the top of the panel: servings per container and serving size. A bottle that advertises "60 capsules" might define one serving as three capsules, which quietly triples the cost per day.
2. Look for real dosages, not proprietary blends
"Proprietary blend" is the classic transparency dodge. A blend can legally list its total weight while hiding how much of each ingredient it contains — so a 500 mg blend might be 490 mg of inexpensive filler and 10 mg of the headline ingredient. Transparent brands disclose every ingredient with its individual dose.
Where research exists on an ingredient, compare the label dose with the amounts used in studies. A product can truthfully claim it "contains" an ingredient while including far less than any studied amount. The presence of an ingredient is not the same as an effective dose.
3. Read the "other ingredients" list
Below the active ingredients sits the list of excipients: fillers, binders, flow agents, sweeteners, colourings and the capsule or tablet shell itself. This list is ordered by weight, just like a food label.
A short, recognisable list is generally a good sign. Watch for artificial colourings, large amounts of added sugars or sugar alcohols, and long chains of unfamiliar additives. None of these automatically makes a product bad, but they are worth knowing about — particularly if you take several products whose additives add up across the day.
4. Verify third-party testing, not just confident wording
Phrases like "laboratory tested", "pharmaceutical grade" and "GMP certified" sound reassuring, but they mean different things. GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification applies to the facility, not to the finished product in your hand. "Laboratory tested" can mean the company tested its own product once.
What carries real weight is independent third-party verification: marks such as NSF Certified for Sport, USP Verified, Informed-Sport, or a published certificate of analysis from an accredited lab. If a brand claims third-party testing, the certificate should be findable — a batch number you can look up is the gold standard. 5. Do the maths on servings, cost and daily values
Two more numbers deserve your attention. First, the percentage of Daily Value (% DV) next to each nutrient. Exceeding 100% is normal for water-soluble vitamins such as B12, which the body excretes, but very high doses of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) accumulate in the body and warrant a conversation with a pharmacist or clinician — especially if you take more than one product containing them.
Second, work out the true daily cost. Divide the price by the number of daily servings, not the number of capsules. A £20 bottle with 30 daily servings costs the same per day as a £40 bottle with 60.
Putting it into practice
These five checks take about two minutes once you know what to look for, and they filter out a surprising share of the market. When you want to see the framework applied to a real product, independent reviews like this one walk through the same label-reading process step by step.
One final note: this article is educational, not medical advice. Supplements can interact with medicines and are not appropriate for everyone, so speak to a qualified health professional before starting anything new.
