Solar Just Passed Nuclear — And It Isn't Looking Back
For the first time in history, the world generates more electricity from sunlight than from splitting atoms.
According to the World Nuclear Industry Status Report 2026, solar power surpassed nuclear generation globally in 2025 — a milestone that would have seemed impossible a decade ago. The crossover happened on a monthly basis in April 2025, and from March 2025 through June 2026, either solar or wind individually outgenerated nuclear every single month.
This isn't a fluke. It's the inevitable result of one technology growing at 27% per year while the other has been essentially flat for a quarter century.
The Numbers Tell a Stark Story
Solar in 2025:
- 510 GW of new capacity added (total: 2,383 GW)
- Generation up 30% year over year
- Conservative estimates — IEA data suggests actual additions were closer to 690 GW
Wind in 2025:
- Record 159 GW added (total: 1,291 GW)
- Generation up 14%
Nuclear in 2025:
- Just 1.5 GW net capacity added (total: 399.5 GW)
- Operating capacity actually declined by 0.5 GW
- Generation up only 1.1% — and that was entirely driven by China
- Outside China, nuclear generation declined
Nuclear's share of global electricity has fallen to 8.8% — its lowest level in 45 years, roughly half its 1996 peak of 17.5%.
Why Nuclear Can't Keep Up
The report is blunt about the nuclear industry's struggles. Holtec, a major U.S. nuclear company, put its IPO on hold days before listing after hoping to raise nearly $1 billion. Fermi, another U.S. nuclear firm, has lost about 80% of its stock value since going public in October 2025.
The problem isn't ideology — it's construction speed and cost. Nuclear plants take 10-15 years to build. Solar farms take months. In 2025, four reactors started supplying electricity while seven closed — the first negative annual reactor balance since 2021.
Most new nuclear construction is concentrated in just two countries: China and Russia. The rest of the world is voting with its checkbooks, and they're writing them to solar and wind.
The Battery Multiplier
Perhaps the most important enabler: battery costs are collapsing. In 2025 alone, 104 GW / 257 GWh of grid-scale battery storage was installed. More than 78% of all cumulative battery capacity was added in just the last three years.
This matters because it solves solar's biggest weakness — intermittency. Cheap batteries mean solar power captured at noon can light homes at midnight. The "but the sun doesn't shine at night" argument is dying a rapid death.
What This Means
For climate: Solar + wind + batteries are now the default choice for new power generation in most of the world. The energy transition isn't coming — it's here.
For geopolitics: Countries that bet big on nuclear (France, Japan post-Fukushima, the US) are watching their energy costs rise relative to solar-first nations. Sunlight is the most democratic energy source on Earth.
For AI: Data centers are power-hungry. The cheapest, fastest-to-deploy power source is now solar. Expect hyperscalers to announce massive solar+battery installations for AI training clusters.
For the future: The crossover point for total annual generation happened in 2025. By 2030, solar alone will likely generate more electricity than nuclear and hydro combined. The grid of the future is being built today, and it's mostly photovoltaic.
The atom had a 70-year head start. The sun just passed it. And it's only accelerating.
