A breakdown of Amazon Echo status lights, focusing on the slow flashing yellow notification indicator, its origin in 2017, and how users can manage or clear messages, reminders, and app permissions programmatically or via voice.
How to read and turn off notifications
This system has been in use since 2017 to notify you about various things, such as important news, calendar reminders, and even the status of your orders. If you see the yellow light flashing, the easiest way to stop it is to ask Alexa herself.
You can simply say, “What notifications do I have?” or “What messages do I have?” Alexa will read you the list of news and you can manage the data. If it’s a reminder, you can ask, “What are my reminders?” and then ask to have it dismissed, snoozed, or rescheduled.
How to set what notifies you
If you want to change which services can turn on this yellow light, you can use the Alexa app on your phone or tablet. By going to the “More,” “Settings,” and “Notifications,” you can customize the feature to your preferences.

The same goes for additional voice apps, as well as connected security cameras or doorbells. If a camera or doorbell detects a person or package, your device can alert you in the same way. You can manage these settings within the app by going to Voice Apps and Account Settings.
What do the other colors on Echo mean?
The device's luminous bezel uses many different colors to indicate its status:
- Blue light: It indicates that Alexa is listening to you, processing your command, or receiving a software update.
- Flashing light blue or light blue: It indicates that Alexa is waiting for a command, while if it is spinning, it means that the device is starting up or restarting after an update.
- Red light: It means that a key function, such as the microphone or video sharing, is closed by the physical button on the device.
- Rotating orange light: Indicates that the device is in installation mode or trying to connect to the internet.
- Flashing green light: It means you have an incoming call or an intercom connection is in progress.
- Purple light: It appears briefly when the device is in do not disturb mode, while during installation it may indicate a problem with the internet.
- White light: Appears to show the current volume level when you adjust it.
