Adrian Vovk announced GNOME OS Preview, built on GNOME 51 and Linux kernel 7.2.6.
The release showcases zswap memory improvements, dynamic swap expansion, and new developer tools like Toolpak, alongside ongoing work on systemd-homed integration and delta updates.
Until now, this system has mainly served as a testing platform for the developers themselves, hosting daily changes. The new version is based on GNOME 51 and uses the Linux 7.2.6 kernel. At the same time, the older testing version will continue to exist for those who constantly monitor the latest changes.
New features and improvements
Over the past year, the development team has added several improvements, such as better memory management and automatic expansion of available storage that acts as auxiliary memory.
Additionally, the Test Center was added, allowing users to install experimental applications directly from development proposals. At the same time, Toolpak, a new project for easy installation and distribution of development tools, was created.

Experimental nature and future plans
Despite the improvements, the new version remains experimental. The developers warn that it may not offer a smooth upgrade path to the future final version. The team does not intend to characterize the operating system as fully stable until it ensures a clean and long-term upgrade process.
Development continues with work on deeper user management integration, a redesign of the installer, better hardware security support, and improved compatibility with ARM devices. Plans also include sending out incremental updates to reduce the download size from the roughly two gigabytes that the entire system currently requires.
Those interested can download the trial version from the official project website at os.gnome.org.
