An overview of ZimaOS, a Linux-based NAS operating system built with Buildroot by IceWhale Technology.
Explore its storage management capabilities, including ZFS pool support, RAID configurations, encrypted volumes, Docker integration, and built-in virtualization for x86-64 systems.
Unlike CasaOS, which is a platform that is installed on top of an existing Linux distribution, ZimaOS is a complete, standalone operating system. It has its own installation images and a web-based management environment.
File storage and management capabilities
In the storage area, ZimaOS supports multiple disks for additional capacity, speed or data security. Through the management interface, users can manage their disks, while there is also support for more advanced archiving settings via command line tools.
For network file sharing, the system offers support for shared folders with per-user permissions, as well as folder encryption and connection to uninterruptible power supplies. Backups can also be set up between local drives, network shares, and online storage services.

Applications and remote access
The system includes a built-in app store with more than 800 titles and support for programs that allow other operating systems to run.
Remote access to files and management is done through special applications, as well as through networking tools such as Tailscale or WireGuard.
Editions and cost
ZimaOS is available in a free and paid version. The free version limits usage to up to four drives and three users. A one-time license costing $29 removes these restrictions.
The full source code for ZimaOS is not publicly available, so it is not considered a fully open source distribution. The system is aimed at standard computers with UEFI capabilities, requires a dedicated disk to run, and requires secure boot to be disabled.
