If your agent forgets a project decision after a restart, test four things separately: was the decision saved, did the next session open the intended memory store, was the decision retrieved, and did the agent use it? Treat these as separate checks rather than taking a successful installation as proof of working memory.
This guide proposes a small acceptance test you can adapt to your own setup. It does not rank memory products or promise a retrieval success rate.
1. Choose one harmless fact
Use a synthetic project convention, not a password or customer record. For example:
In the demo-orchard project, put generated reports in the orchard-output directory.
Make the fact distinctive enough to recognize later. Record the intended project scope and the exact statement in your test notes. Do not use a convention the agent could infer from an existing repository instruction file: you want to test the memory path, not a lucky guess.
2. Confirm the write before restarting
Ask the agent to save the convention. Inspect the tool result and, where your system allows it, the stored record. Keep its identifier so you can distinguish the new record from an older copy.
For a PLUR integration, the documented plur_learn tool stores a correction, preference, or convention. Its scope should match the content: a project detail belongs in a project scope, such as project:demo-orchard. PLUR's documentation specifically advises choosing scope for each learned item rather than treating it as a once-per-session decision. PLUR setup and tool reference.
A useful test note is simply:
Expected statement: generated reports go in orchard-output
Expected project: demo-orchard
Write result: inspect before continuing
Stored identifier: copy from the actual result
If you cannot confirm the write, stop this test here. Restarting cannot establish that an unconfirmed write succeeded.
3. Start a genuinely fresh session
Close the test conversation and open a new one in the same project. Do not paste the answer into the new prompt. Ask:
Where should generated reports go in this project? Check saved project context before answering.
Record what happens. A correct answer alone is weaker evidence than a correct answer accompanied by the expected retrieved record. Ask for the memory identifier or tool result when the integration exposes it; do not ask the model to invent a provenance explanation.
4. Separate explicit recall from automatic loading
If the agent cannot answer, try an explicit memory lookup. In PLUR, plur_recall retrieves relevant memories, while plur_inject_hybrid selects engrams for the current task within a token budget. These are documented tools, not evidence that your particular session has invoked them. PLUR tool reference.
Use this diagnostic table to decide what to inspect next:
| Observation | Next check |
|---|---|
| No confirmed stored record | Write result, selected store, and write errors |
| Record exists but explicit recall misses it | Query wording, selected store, and scope |
| Explicit recall finds it but automatic context does not | Integration setup and lifecycle behavior |
| Relevant context arrives but the answer ignores it | Conflicting instructions and the task prompt |
These are troubleshooting hypotheses, not a guarantee that each symptom has only one cause.
PLUR's README distinguishes MCP tool access from adapters that load memory automatically. A tools-only connection and an automatic-loading integration are different configurations. Check the documented integration for your actual client before expecting a restart to load context on its own. PLUR integration overview.
5. Test a changed decision
Next, change the synthetic convention: reports should now go in orchard-reviewed. Use your memory system's supported correction procedure, inspect the resulting state, and repeat the fresh-session question.
The acceptance criterion is not merely that the new statement appears somewhere. Check that the agent uses the current convention and does not silently revive the old one. If both records are returned, inspect how your application resolves them. Keep the test small enough that you can read every relevant record.
Do not confuse retirement with immediate erasure. PLUR documents plur_forget as retiring a memory whose activation decays and which is eventually pruned. That description does not establish immediate removal from every backup, export, or other copy. PLUR tool reference.
6. Turn the test into an acceptance checklist
Before declaring the integration ready, verify:
- The synthetic convention was stored in the intended scope.
- A fresh session retrieved the expected record without being given its answer.
- You distinguished explicit recall from automatic loading.
- The agent used the retrieved convention in its answer.
- A changed convention survived another restart without the obsolete value taking over.
- You cleaned up the synthetic test data using your system's documented procedure.
Repeat this small test after changing the integration, store configuration, or session lifecycle. It gives you a concrete way to describe a failure: “the write succeeded, but fresh-session recall missed the record” is more actionable than “the agent forgot again.”
What this test does not prove
One successful round trip does not establish performance across all tasks, safe sharing across every account, or comprehensive deletion. Test those requirements separately. The aim here is narrower: demonstrate that one intentional piece of project context survives a restart and influences the next session for the right reason.
