Repositories now ship instruction files for AI coding agents: CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, .cursor/rules, .windsurf/rules, .github/copilot-instructions.md, MCP configs. Your AI reads and follows every one of them. Your reviewers barely look at them.
That gap is already being exploited. Pillar Security showed how a poisoned rule file makes Copilot and Cursor write backdoored code, with the payload hidden in invisible Unicode that stays invisible in diffs and in GitHub's PR view. AgentSeal scanned 50 public cursor rules files and found 6 with hidden instructions, including Unicode Tag smuggling - characters no editor renders but every LLM tokenizer reads.
I built agentcheck to scan for this. It is a zero-dependency Node CLI plus a GitHub Action, MIT licensed.
What it does
Point it at a repo. It finds the agent instruction surfaces automatically and flags the documented attack patterns:

That's real output from scanning a repo seeded with the attack techniques from the research above (the fixtures ship in test/fixtures/malicious/).
The 14 rules cover: Unicode Tag smuggling (with the decoded payload shown), zero-width characters, bidi overrides (Trojan Source class), injection phrases ("ignore previous instructions", "do not tell the user"), instructions hidden in HTML comments, exfiltration endpoints and network-plus-secret combinations, dangerous shell commands, base64 blobs, homoglyph mixes, and MCP config checks (plaintext secrets, auto-approved tools, remote servers).
For CI, it exits 1 on findings and emits SARIF 2.1.0, so results land in GitHub code scanning:

What it can't catch
Be skeptical of any tool that promises more than this:
- It is pattern matching, not understanding. An injection written in plain, natural language with no suspicious characters or phrases will not be flagged.
- Novel obfuscation beyond the documented character sets can slip through.
- Remote MCP servers can change their tool descriptions after you scan the config.
- A clean result is not proof of safety. Review changes to agent config files the way you review code changes.
How it was tested
- Detection: fixtures built from the exact techniques in the Pillar Security and AgentSeal write-ups. All caught. 15 tests, running in CI on Node 18, 20 and 22.

False positives: I ran it over 270 real-world rule files - 257
.mdcfiles from awesome-cursorrules plus realAGENTS.md/CLAUDE.mdfiles from public projects (Kubernetes SIGs, Palo Alto Networks, Google, Firebase and others). Zero findings at release. The run caught three of my own false positives before release (atoast.error()call, a# System Prompt:heading, defensive uses of the word "exfiltrate"), which I fixed.
If you find a rule file in the wild that it misses, or a false positive, open an issue with the file (scrub secrets first). Detection patterns get better with real examples.
