E-commerce websites have SEO challenges that are easy to overlook. Product variations, filters, category pages, discontinued products, and duplicate URLs can create complicated crawling and indexing patterns.
A structured audit helps you investigate these issues before making unnecessary changes.
Check Product and Category Pages
Start with your most important categories and products.
Review whether pages have descriptive titles, useful product information, appropriate headings, and clear internal links.
Avoid treating every repeated element as a problem. Some consistency is normal for product templates. Focus on duplication or thin content that creates genuine issues for users or search visibility.
Investigate Crawl and Indexing Signals
Check:
Product URLs returning unexpected status codes
Incorrect canonical tags
Accidental noindex directives
Important pages missing from internal navigation
Sitemap entries that point to unsuitable URLs
Redirects involving discontinued products
Confirm the intended behavior with the site owner before changing indexing directives or redirect rules.
Review Performance
Large product images, unnecessary scripts, third-party apps, and inefficient rendering can affect performance.
Use field data and suitable performance testing tools where available. Test representative templates rather than assuming every product page behaves identically.
Select an Appropriate Audit Tool
Screaming Frog can help crawl product and category URLs. Semrush and Ahrefs offer wider SEO research workflows. SerpSpur provides website auditing and related SEO intelligence features that may be useful when evaluating a broader audit process.
Choose according to your URL volume, required checks, budget, and reporting needs.
Create a Prioritized Fix List
Organize findings into three groups:
High priority: Issues affecting important pages, crawling, indexing, or essential user journeys.
Medium priority: Problems that affect page quality, navigation, or optimization across multiple templates.
Lower priority: Improvements with limited impact or uncertain value that need further investigation.
Recheck the affected pages after implementation.
A successful audit is not about generating the longest report. It's about finding meaningful problems and fixing them safely.
Question: What's the most difficult part of e-commerce SEO for you: duplicate URLs, product-page optimization, crawl budget, or site performance?
