Be predictable. Share the water. Own your mistakes.
Real lineup situations, useful words to say, and the distinction between respect and tolerating aggression.

Surf etiquette is not an entrance exam administered by the angriest person in the lineup. At its best, it is how strangers share moving water without making each other's day dangerous or miserable.
You will make mistakes. So will people who have been surfing for decades. The useful difference is whether you pay attention, take responsibility, and adjust.
The small set of principles underneath the noise
Give an established rider space. Don't drop in or snake to manufacture priority. Paddle around the riding area where practicable, keep control of your board, communicate, and don't dive headfirst into unknown depth. These are recurring elements in RNLI's recreational surfing guidance. [1]
The rest of this article applies those ideas to ordinary situations. The examples assume a recreational lineup, not an organized competition with a priority system.
"Whose wave?" needs context
The person closest to the breaking part of the wave usually has priority when surfers are taking off together. But "closest to the peak," "first standing," and "furthest out" are not interchangeable permission slips. RNLI's simplified list includes several such cues; read them in context rather than using one to erase an already established ride. [1]
Example: somebody is already riding toward you. Don't paddle into their path and explain that your board stood up a fraction earlier at a different moment. Look, leave space, and choose a different wave.
Example: two people are waiting at a clear A-frame. A simple "You going left?" can clarify whether opposite directions are workable. Don't assume a vague nod has created enough room when it hasn't.
Example: you can always catch the wave farther out. The fact that your board can do it does not make repeatedly taking every wave generous or sensible. Notice who has been waiting. Our recommendation is to use your advantage with restraint, not turn it into a loophole.
Paddling back out is part of the ride
Avoid routing straight through the area people are surfing. If you are caught inside, don't sprint toward the open face directly in front of an approaching rider just to avoid the whitewater. Leave the rider room and choose the safest available path for everyone. [1]
Example: you see the surfer coming but cannot clear the area cleanly. Make your movement deliberate and predictable. Last-second zigzags can turn an awkward situation into a guessing game. Ask an instructor to work through local return routes with you; those routes are specific to the spot and conditions.
Example: your paddle-out requires throwing the board repeatedly. Change the plan. A leash is not a promise that a released board cannot reach another person. Don't make somebody behind you absorb the consequences of a session beyond your control. [2]
A useful apology is short and followed by a change
Try: "Sorry—I didn't see you. Are you okay?" Or: "That was mine to avoid. I'll give you room."
Then actually give room. An explanation can wait until the immediate safety issue is settled. Our recommendation is to skip the defensive courtroom speech, especially while both people are still trying to manage boards.
If someone else makes the mistake, start with the behavior and what is needed: "Please look inside before taking off," rather than a character assessment. You are trying to make the next interaction safer, not win a public performance of outrage.
Respect is not submission to aggression
Being new does not make you available for threats. Being experienced does not make somebody the owner of the water.
If a situation becomes hostile, disengage and move toward safety. Get help from lifeguards or appropriate authorities when needed. An etiquette article cannot guarantee a peaceful encounter, and no wave is worth escalating a confrontation to defend your pride.
That does not excuse careless surfing. Two things can be true: you may need to change a dangerous habit, and the person addressing it may be behaving unacceptably.
The quiet part that improves everything
Look around. Say hello without demanding conversation. Don't arrive with a whole group and occupy every opportunity. Keep access points and the beach tidy. Ask before assuming you understand a local convention.
Those are recommendations for sharing a place, not a secret hierarchy to memorize. The measure is whether your presence leaves other people able to enjoy their session too.
Nobody should need a hard lesson from an angry stranger to learn a simple rule. Learn the useful parts, keep your ego small, and leave some waves for the next person. There is a lot of joy out here. Don't become the administrative obstacle between somebody else and theirs.
