Car Broke Down on Jacksonville Highway: Who to Call Right Now: Roadside Tips

> **Quick Answer:** Call 911 if you're in danger. If you're safely off the road, call a local tow company or your roadside assistance provider next. In Jacksonville, FDOT's Road Rangers patrol I-95, I-10, and I-295 during peak hours and will stop to help for free. If you don't have coverage, a local tow typically runs $75 to $150 for the first several miles.

## Who Do I Call First If I Break Down on I-95 or I-10 in Jacksonville?

Call 911 if you're blocking traffic, injured, or in immediate danger. Otherwise, your next call depends on what you have: roadside assistance through insurance, AAA, or a standalone tow company.

FDOT's Road Ranger program covers Jacksonville's major corridors, including I-95 from the Georgia state line down through Downtown, I-10 heading west toward Baldwin, and I-295 around the Westside Connector interchange. Rangers drive white trucks with yellow lights and will push your car to a safe exit, change a flat, or bring a gallon of gas at no charge. They're most active during morning and evening rush hours. If you're outside those windows, don't count on them showing up.

If Road Rangers don't materialize, call your insurer's roadside line, AAA, or search "tow truck Jacksonville FL" for a local company. Have your exact location ready: nearest mile marker, exit number, or cross street. On I-95 southbound near the Emerson Street exit or I-10 near the Lane Avenue interchange, these details get the truck to you faster.

## Is It Safe to Stay in My Car or Should I Get Out?

Get out of the car and move behind the guardrail if you're on a high-speed highway like I-95 or I-295. Staying in the driver's seat while semis blow past at 70 mph is more dangerous than standing 20 feet off the roadway.

If you're on a surface road like US-1 through Riverside or US-17 near Orange Park, staying near the car is usually fine as long as you're fully onto the shoulder. Turn on your hazard lights the moment you feel something wrong. Once stopped, set road flares or reflective triangles at least 100 feet behind the vehicle if you have them. At night on any Jacksonville interstate, standing behind a guardrail is the right call. ## How Much Will a Tow Cost Me in Jacksonville Without Roadside Coverage?

Expect to pay $75 to $125 for a local tow within Jacksonville city limits, plus $3 to $5 per mile beyond the first 5 to 7 miles. A tow from I-95 near the airport up to Ponte Vedra or down to Mandarin could run $150 to $200 depending on the company and time of day. A few things push the price up: after-hours calls, vehicles that need a flatbed (AWD, low-clearance cars, flood damage), and long hauls across the St. Johns River. If you're on the Arlington side

and your shop is in Riverside or Avondale, factor in bridge routing. Get a firm quote before the truck hooks up. Once it's hooked, you're typically committed to that price.

## What If I Break Down in a Spot With No Shoulder or Near a Dangerous Intersection?

Get the car as far right as possible and call 911 immediately. Sections of US-1 near Downtown Jacksonville, the Springfield neighborhood, and the merge at I-95/I-10 near the Jaxport connector have tight shoulders and heavy truck traffic. These are not places to wait it out alone.

JSO (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office) will respond and can help manage traffic while you wait. They can also contact FDOT's Traffic Engineering Center, which monitors the city's major corridors via camera and can dispatch help faster than you might expect. If your car is completely blocking a lane, that's an emergency call, full stop.

## Common Questions

**Q: Does Jacksonville have free roadside assistance on the highway?**
A: Yes. FDOT Road Rangers cover I-95, I-10, I-295, and parts of US-1 and Beach Boulevard (US-90) during peak hours. They can push your car to safety, change a flat, or bring fuel at no cost. Outside peak hours, coverage is spotty, so don't rely on them as your only plan.

**Q: How long will a tow truck take to reach me on I-95 in Jacksonville?**
A: Most Jacksonville tow companies estimate 30 to 60 minutes during normal traffic. Rush hour on I-95 near the Baymeadows or Lem Turner interchanges can stretch that closer to 90 minutes. Call as soon as you're safely stopped.

**Q: Can I just leave my car on the shoulder of I-295 and come back later?**
A: Not safely, and probably not legally. FHP and JSO can tag and tow vehicles left unattended on interstate shoulders, sometimes within an hour. You also leave yourself liable if your car causes an accident. Get it moved the same day.

**Q: What information do I need to give a tow truck dispatcher?**
A: Your exact location (highway, direction of travel, nearest mile marker or exit), your phone number, whether the car is drivable at all, and whether it needs a flatbed. Giving incomplete location info is the single biggest cause of delayed response.

**Q: My car broke down in Jacksonville but I don't have AAA or roadside insurance. What are my options?**
A: Call a local independent tow company directly. You can also check whether your credit card offers roadside assistance as a benefit. Some manufacturers like Ford and GM include complimentary roadside for newer vehicles. If cost is a concern, get quotes from two companies before committing.
