d3kOS is an open‑source AI marine operating system that runs across the helm, web, and mobile. It replaces aging gauges, unifies navigation and safety systems, digitizes manuals, and delivers real‑time intelligence, diagnostics, and self‑healing capabilities. The entire platform is built on affordable DIY hardware using Raspberry Pi and PiCAN‑M components.
The project began with a simple but urgent problem: as a new boater dealing with failing 1990s electronics, incomplete paper manuals, and no reliable guidance during real emergencies, I needed a helm system that actually understood my boat. d3kOS was created to solve that. Built from a Raspberry Pi, a PiCAN‑M HAT, and a handful of accessible accessories, it starts by digitizing every manual into searchable PDFs so the onboard AI can answer practical questions—like the location of a breaker switch—without requiring a trip into a hot engine bay or a search through outdated binders.
From that foundation, the system evolved into a fully turnkey platform built on a standard hardware configuration. An onboard setup wizard automatically identifies components such as the CX5106 analog‑to‑digital converter and configures dip switches without user guesswork. The dashboard introduces three intelligent ribbons—Engine, Navigation, and Weather—replacing old gauges with crisp digital instruments that act as interactive, AI‑backed diagnostics. They explain limits, detect anomalies, and recommend actions when something isn’t right.
AVNAV provides full marine navigation with AIS overlays, while the IP67 forward‑watch bow camera uses machine learning to identify hazards such as people, kayaks, debris, or ice and place them directly on the chart. Marine Vision adds multi‑camera visibility, night‑vision support, snapshots, and video capture, all accessible through the mobile app. Voice‑to‑text Boat Log entries, onboard alerts, and an AI assistant trained exclusively on your boat’s systems make the helm smarter without adding complexity.
Behind the scenes, d3kOS continuously monitors engine variables, navigation data, and its own operating health. Self‑healing tools—including FIX MY PI—are available through the mobile app to repair corruption or restore configurations without technical expertise. Privacy is built into four tiers (T0–T3) aligned with EU, US, and Canadian standards. Accessibility meets AODA/WCAG 2.0, and security aligns with the OWASP Top 10.
The AtMyBoat.com ecosystem extends the platform with cloud‑based configuration storage, fleet management, AI‑generated diagnostic reports, media management, alerts, incremental updates, and real‑time bug tracking where fixes deploy in hours instead of months. With monthly (T2) and yearly fleet (T3) subscriptions, d3kOS becomes more than an open‑source helm—it becomes a continuously improving, self‑diagnosing, AI‑powered marine operating system designed to keep boaters safe, informed, and in control.
