A deal that grows on the way to your door
That $200 product is not $200. Add international shipping, customs duty, import tax, and the brokerage fee the carrier charges for filing the paperwork, and the same order can land at $280ā$350. The difference is not a scam; it is a set of learnable rules. Know your country's threshold, check who ships from where, and calculate the landed cost before you compare it to the local price.
The three thresholds that decide most bills
Every country draws a "de minimis" line below which no duty is charged. The US line is $800, the EU line is ā¬150, the UK line is Ā£135. Above the line, three factors set your bill: the product category (clothing can carry 12% duty, electronics 0% to 20%), the country of origin (free trade agreements can erase the duty), and the value the seller declares on the customs form.
That last factor deserves a warning. Under-declaring to dodge duty is not a hack; it is illegal and can get the package seized. Above the $800, ā¬150, and Ā£135 lines, the declared value is the number that sets your bill, so keep it honest.
Landed cost is the only price that counts
Landed cost is the sum of five things: the product price, the international shipping fee, customs duties, import taxes (VAT, GST, or sales tax), and the brokerage fee for processing the paperwork. Express carriers like DHL, FedEx, and UPS collect duties at delivery; you pay the courier, not customs directly. USPS packages can be held at your local post office until you pay. A $200 product can easily become $280ā$350 once every line is added, which is why the domestic alternative deserves a second look.
Where you live changes the math
United States
- Packages valued under $800 are duty-free. DHL, FedEx, and UPS collect duties at delivery; USPS may hold the package at the post office.
European Union
Since July 2021, the ā¬150 threshold applies to all goods.
VAT runs 17ā27% by country and applies to imports above ā¬150.
Some EU countries charge VAT on low-value goods (ā¬0āā¬150) when the seller is not registered for IOSS.
Keep your receipts and customs documentation for at least one year.
United Kingdom
Goods under Ā£135 are duty-free; VAT at 20% is collected at the point of sale if the seller is UK-registered.
Above Ā£135, customs duty and VAT are collected before delivery.
Five ways to keep fees off your invoice
Buy from sellers who ship inside your country. This eliminates customs entirely, and some international sellers run local warehouses for exactly this reason. A $200 order that never leaves your country stays a $200 order.
Prefer Delivered Duty Paid (DDP). All customs costs are already in the price you pay, which turns a possible $280ā$350 landing bill into the number on the screen.
Consolidate orders. One large package is usually cheaper per item than several small ones.
In the EU, pick IOSS-registered sellers. IOSS (Import One-Stop Shop) means VAT is collected at purchase, so the package clears customs faster with no additional fees and the ā¬150 line stops mattering.
Know your travel allowance. Many countries let you bring goods back up to a certain value without duty when you travel, and that rule is separate from the $800, ā¬150, and Ā£135 import lines.
Shipping speed is a fee you choose
Economy shipping is the cheapest line on the invoice and the hardest on patience: 2ā6 weeks, with postal services slower at customs. Standard international runs 1ā3 weeks with basic tracking. Express (DHL, FedEx, UPS) delivers in 3ā7 days with full tracking and brokerage included, but the fees run higher.
Time-sensitive order? Budget for express. Everything else is a trade-off: slower lanes cost less per day but leave more room for a customs hold, which alone can run 1ā5 business days.
Your package is in customs. Now what?
A customs hold looks worse than it is: the normal range is 1ā5 business days.
Read the tracking status. "Held by customs" is normal and usually clears in 1ā5 business days.
If you receive a documentation request, reply promptly with your receipt and proof of purchase.
Pay any duties quickly; storage fees add up.
After two weeks of silence, contact the carrier directly.
If customs inspects or opens the package, that is legal and does not mean there is a problem.
What customs will keep
Some orders never arrive, and it is not the carrier's fault. Lithium batteries are restricted on most airlines, which limits their shipping options. Foods, plants, agricultural products, counterfeit goods, hazardous materials, and weapons and certain sporting equipment are blocked or seized in most jurisdictions. Check your country's customs website before ordering anything near that list. A seized package means losing the product and the money, and a $200 order disappears with nothing to show for it.
The rule to shop international by
Compare landed cost, never the product price alone. If a seller ships from inside your country or offers DDP, that is usually the better click. If the only cheap lane is economy shipping from the other side of the world, plan for the slow end of the 2ā6 week window and re-check the threshold for your country. The math stays simple: $800, ā¬150, Ā£135. Know your line, and a $200 product can stay a $200 product. For the same rules applied to specific categories, our guides collection is the next stop.
