Most browser users don't think about the rendering engine. But the rendering engine is what makes Firefox fundamentally different from Chrome, Safari, and Edge — and why Firefox matters for web standards diversity.
What a Rendering Engine Does
The browser rendering engine does three main things:
- Parses HTML → Creates a DOM (Document Object Model)
- Parses CSS → Applies styles to DOM nodes
- Renders → Draws the resulting layout to the screen
It also implements web platform APIs (JavaScript APIs, WebAssembly, WebGL, etc.) through tight integration with the JavaScript engine.
Gecko: Firefox's Engine
Gecko is Mozilla's rendering engine, developed since 1997. Current Gecko is the result of two major architectural transformations:
Quantum (2017): A multi-year rewrite of Gecko's core components using Rust. Components rewritten include:
- CSS selector matching (Stylo)
- The rendering pipeline (WebRender)
- Browser UI itself (migrated from XUL)
Fission (2021): Site isolation. Each origin gets its own process, like Chrome's multi-process architecture. This was the other major security improvement.
The JS Engine: SpiderMonkey
Gecko uses SpiderMonkey as its JavaScript engine. Chrome uses V8.
Both are JIT-compiling engines. SpiderMonkey compiles frequently-run JavaScript to optimized native code using:
- Baseline compiler: Fast initial compilation
- IonMonkey: Optimizing JIT for hot code
- Warp: Newer backend replacing parts of IonMonkey (2021+)
SpiderMonkey also runs all WebAssembly in Firefox.
JS engine performance: V8 and SpiderMonkey are broadly competitive. Neither has a consistent advantage across all workloads. Specific benchmarks favor one or the other, but real-world applications show roughly similar performance.
WebRender: GPU-Accelerated Rendering
WebRender (part of Quantum) replaced the old software rendering path with GPU-accelerated rendering. WebRender is written in Rust and came from the Servo research browser.
How it works: Instead of painting the page incrementally (repainting only changed areas), WebRender builds a display list and submits the entire frame to the GPU. The GPU handles compositing, transformations, and animations.
Benefits:
- Smoother scrolling
- Better animation performance
- Less CPU usage for rendering
- Consistent 60fps on capable hardware
Verify WebRender is active: about:support → search "WebRender" → should show "enabled by default" or "forced by user."
Stylo: Parallel CSS Processing
Stylo (also from Servo) replaced the single-threaded CSS engine with a parallel implementation written in Rust. CSS style recalculation now uses all available CPU cores.
Practical impact: Pages with large stylesheets (complex CSS frameworks, theme systems) process styles faster. The improvement is most noticeable on multi-core hardware with complex CSS.
Gecko vs Blink: Key Technical Differences
Layout engine: Both implement CSS specifications but with different codepaths. This causes the browser-specific CSS rendering differences developers encounter (slightly different flexbox behavior, grid line calculations, etc.)
JavaScript engine: SpiderMonkey vs V8 — both are excellent, with different optimization profiles.
Extension architecture: Firefox extensions use GeckoDriver APIs; Chrome uses Chrome-specific APIs. This is why some extensions don't port cleanly.
MV3 WebRequest: Firefox's Gecko allows blocking webRequest in MV3; Blink/Chrome's implementation doesn't. This is the key difference for ad blocking.
Rendering: WebRender (Firefox/Gecko) vs Blink's compositing model — both are GPU-accelerated but different implementations.
The Servo Connection
Servo is Mozilla's experimental browser engine, written entirely in Rust, designed for the multi-core parallel-processing future. Several Servo components have been integrated into Gecko (Stylo, WebRender).
The full Servo engine is now maintained by the Linux Foundation Servo project (Mozilla transferred it in 2020 when Mozilla laid off the Servo team). Servo continues as a research engine and embedding target.
Why Engine Diversity Matters
If all browsers used Blink (Chrome's engine), the web would effectively be defined by what Blink supports. Site developers could stop testing other engines, CSS and JavaScript would evolve based on Blink's priorities, and the standards process would be dominated by Blink implementers.
This already happened to some extent with IE: when IE had 90% market share, "web standards" meant "what IE supported," and cross-browser compatibility was a nightmare.
Gecko (Firefox) and WebKit (Safari) being real alternatives forces the standards process to remain open and vendor-neutral. Features need to be acceptable to all three engines to become standards.
Reading the Gecko Source
Gecko is open source: https://searchfox.org/mozilla-central/source
Notable directories:
-
layout/— Layout engine -
servo/— Stylo CSS engine components -
js/src/— SpiderMonkey JavaScript engine -
gfx/wr/— WebRender GPU renderer -
toolkit/components/extensions/— Extension APIs
The codebase is primarily C++, with growing amounts of Rust (WebRender, Stylo, and newer components). SpiderMonkey is C++ with assembly in hot paths.
For Web Developers
Understanding Gecko vs Blink differences:
- Test your site in both Firefox and Chrome during development
- Use MDN compatibility tables when using newer CSS/JS features
- When debugging browser-specific behavior, the first question is "is this Gecko or Blink behaving differently from the spec?"
- File bugs at bugzilla.mozilla.org when Firefox behavior differs from the spec (it matters — Gecko developers fix spec-compliance bugs)
The investment in cross-engine testing is what keeps the web open.
