A Star Is Vanity. This One Wasn't.

Stars are vanity. Everyone says so, and everyone is right.

Then Dietrich Gebert, the founder of Ponytail, a repo with around 164k stars of its own, starred one of mine.

I'd messaged him out of the blue. That's the part I almost didn't do.

The senior dev who writes one line

If you haven't met Ponytail, picture the laziest senior dev you've ever worked with. Long ponytail. Oval glasses. You show him fifty lines. He says nothing and replaces them with one.

Ponytail puts that guy inside your AI agent. Before anything gets built, it asks: does this need to exist? Then it climbs down a ladder: reuse what's already in the codebase, use the standard library, use a native platform feature, and only then write the minimum.

It works, too. Ponytail 5 reports 53% less code, 41% less time, 26% lower cost, and 98% of risky logic still ships with a test (68% without it). My favorite proof is the date picker. Without Ponytail, the agent hand-builds a 335-line calendar. With it, you get 10 lines that reuse the repo's Input and let the browser bring the calendar.

Less code, no less safe. That idea got into my head and stayed there.

Two projects with his fingerprints on them

I've followed Dietrich's journey for a long time, and it changed what I build:

Token Sensei gives AI agents an execution budget and pauses at a checkpoint so you decide whether to continue.
Sir Shortoken is a disciplined AI persona with a one-line promise: know more, say less, prove it. It aims for 40–60% shorter technical explanations with the core concepts intact, plus a ledger at the end of every reply.

Different projects, same stance: respect the reader's time, and make every line earn its place. I was building in his direction long before he knew I existed.

The message

So I wrote to him about DEV·TV, my solo project that turns the developer internet (GitHub, Hacker News, new models, agent skills) into live TV channels. I asked for two things: permission to feature Ponytail on the Spotlight channel, and honest feedback, even if it was bad.

He said yes to the Spotlight. He liked the idea. And he gave me something better than a compliment: a product idea. A personalized channel that learns what each viewer cares about, so they see what matches their taste instead of what's merely nearby.

That's now on my v3 roadmap.

He starred my repo before Ponytail even went live on Spotlight. A small thing for him, and a huge one for me.

What a star can't measure

I still believe stars are vanity. But this one came with a person behind it, someone whose work shaped mine, saying: this is worth your time.

What I took from it:

Feedback beats metrics. One real reply from a builder you respect outweighs a thousand anonymous stars.
Following builders is mentorship. You don't need their permission, and they don't need to know you're watching.
Send the message. The worst case is silence. The best case is this post.

If you've built something, send it to the person who inspired it.
