Competitor ads can show you what a brand is testing, how it frames an offer, and which ideas stay in circulation. They cannot reveal the brand’s actual spend, targeting, conversion rate, or return on ad spend unless the advertiser shares those figures. Use the public evidence to form creative hypotheses, then validate them in your own account.
Step 1: Find and Verify the Ads
Start with TikTok’s Commercial Content Library where it covers your market. Search the advertiser name and check the available country and date filters. The library’s coverage and fields vary by region, so confirm that your target market is supported before treating a missing result as evidence that a competitor is inactive. Try the brand name, parent company, and known legal entity if the first search is empty.
For each relevant ad, record the advertiser, market, creative link or screenshot, available publication or display dates, format, visible offer, and destination page if accessible. Save the date you checked it, too: public listings and landing pages can change. If you are researching a market outside the library’s coverage, use TikTok Creative Center, the brand’s profile, and an ad discovery tool to find leads, then label their source. A discovery tool’s listing is useful for research, but its coverage is not a complete record of every ad the advertiser ran.
Look for Spark Ads as well as standard in-feed creative. A Spark Ad uses an existing TikTok post in an ad campaign; its public engagement can reflect activity before and during promotion. Record the format because that distinction matters when you compare visible interactions later.
Step 2: Compare Engagement Without Mistaking It for Performance
Use an ad research tool to organize the ads from Step 1. Where views, likes, comments, and shares are available, calculate a simple interaction rate:
Interaction rate = (Likes + Comments + Shares) / Views
Compare ads from a similar market, format, and observation date. A rate based on today’s public totals is a snapshot, not “engagement velocity.” You can only measure velocity if you recorded the same ad’s counts at two or more known times. In that case, track the change in interactions and views over the same interval.
Read the comments as well as the counts. Questions about sizing, price, delivery, or product use may tell you what the ad left unanswered. Repeated objections can be more useful for a new script than a high like count. Check whether the comments look relevant to the offer, and note when comments are unavailable or heavily moderated.
Do not set a universal “winning” threshold. Paid delivery, audience mix, Spark Ad history, and time live can all affect public engagement. Shortlist ads that show a useful combination of clear positioning, relevant discussion, and continued presence. Keep the shortlist as hypotheses, not proof of sales.
Step 3: Break Down the Creative and the Landing Page
Watch each shortlisted ad once without pausing. What is the promise, and who is it for? On a second pass, log the pieces your team can actually test:
- Hook: Write down the first spoken line, on-screen text, and action in the opening seconds. Identify the problem or payoff they introduce.
- Proof: Note the demo, customer evidence, comparison, or explanation used to support the claim. Separate a visible demonstration from an unsupported assertion.
- Format and pace: Record creator-led versus brand-led delivery, approximate length, major scene changes, captions, and product visibility.
- Offer and call to action: Capture the price or incentive if shown, the requested action, and when the CTA appears. Placement alone does not establish whether an ad targets new or returning customers.
- Audio: Check whether a sound is available for your intended commercial use before putting it in a paid ad. TikTok’s Commercial Music Library is one route to licensed music; do not assume a trending track or a competitor’s audio is cleared for your account.
- Destination: Open the landing page when possible. Compare its headline, offer, product, and next action with the ad. Save a screenshot, because the page may change after the campaign.
The goal is to understand the mechanism, not copy the footage. “A creator shows the product solving a specific problem before naming the offer” is a reusable pattern. The competitor’s script, branding, and footage are not your production assets.
Step 4: Watch Scale Signals With Their Limits in Mind
Check your shortlist on a regular schedule and record whether each ad is still visible, whether new variants appeared, and whether the advertiser changed the offer or destination. A cluster of similar ads can suggest that a brand is testing a theme. Longer visibility can make a creative worth studying, but it does not prove that it is profitable: advertisers may run ads for awareness, retargeting, or other goals.
Some intelligence tools estimate impressions or spend. Treat those numbers as model outputs, and compare them only within the same tool, market, and time window. They are not the competitor’s account data. A reported increase may reflect broader delivery, a data collection change, or a new variant; check the underlying ads before drawing a conclusion.
A simple weekly log is enough: advertiser, creative, observation date, visible status, new variants, estimated reach or spend if supplied, and confidence in the match. It will help you distinguish an actual change in creative strategy from a one-day snapshot.
Step 5: Turn Competitor Research Into a Controlled Test
Write One Testable Hypothesis
Pick one pattern from your shortlist that answers a real question for your brand. For example: does a product demonstration make the benefit clearer than a creator testimonial? Write the hypothesis before production, name the audience and offer, and decide which result would change your next brief.
Build Original Variants
Build two or three original variants. Keep the offer, landing page, audience, optimization goal, and measurement window as consistent as your setup allows; change one major creative element, such as the hook or proof format. This makes the result easier to interpret. Check claims, creator permissions, music rights, and landing-page accuracy before launch.
Measure the Outcome That Matters
Choose the primary metric that matches your objective. For sales, look at cost per purchase or return on ad spend alongside purchase volume. For lead generation, examine qualified leads and cost per qualified lead. Use thumb-stop or early-view metrics to diagnose the hook, and click-through rate to diagnose interest, but do not call an ad successful on views alone. Make sure your TikTok Pixel or other conversion tracking works before you compare results.
Give each variant enough delivery to make a decision under your normal testing rules. Avoid declaring a winner from a handful of purchases or changing budgets, audiences, and creative all at once. Record the spend, dates, results, and any tracking or stock issues. Then decide whether to scale, revise, or stop the idea. If the hypothesis fails, the lesson is still useful: you can test a different proof point or offer rather than repeating a competitor’s hook.
Keep a short research-to-test record for every cycle: source ad, observed pattern, your hypothesis, your original variant, primary metric, result, and next action. Revisit the competitor set monthly and the active test weekly. The advantage is a better question for your next creative test, followed by evidence from your own customers.
