The awkward moment in many meetings comes before the first slide: the presenter hunts through the ribbon for the slideshow button while everyone watches. A handful of keys removes that pause. The catch is that PowerPoint in the browser doesn't behave exactly like the desktop app, so muscle memory from one can fail in the other.
TL;DR: Ctrl + F5 starts from the beginning, Ctrl + Shift + F5 starts from the current slide, arrows move, Esc ends.
We pressed each of these one by one in PowerPoint for the web.
The five shortcuts
- Ctrl + F5: start from the first slide. Even if you're editing slide 4, the show opens full screen on slide 1.
- Ctrl + Shift + F5: start from the current slide. Handy when you only need to present one section, or you're rehearsing a single slide.
- Right arrow: next slide. N and the space bar do the same.
- Left arrow: previous slide. P and Backspace do the same.
- Esc: end the show. You're back in the editing view straight away.
What didn't work in the browser
Two shortcuts that desktop users rely on did nothing in our test, so we left them off the list:
- Typing a slide number and pressing Enter to jump to that slide.
- B and W to blank the screen to black or white.
If you depend on either during a talk (for example, blanking the screen while you take questions), present from the desktop app or plan another way to do it.
It's also worth knowing that plain F5 in a browser usually reloads the page. That is a likely reason the web version uses Ctrl + F5 instead, so make sure your fingers hit the right combination before you go live.
When this saves the most
- Back-to-back meetings where you open someone else's deck and need to start cleanly.
- Rehearsing: Ctrl + Shift + F5 on the slide you're working on, check it, Esc, keep editing.
- Q&A, when someone asks about "the chart two slides back" and the left arrow gets you there without leaving full screen.
Common mistakes
- Clicking to advance. It works, but a stray click on a link or a video starts something you didn't intend. The arrow keys don't have that problem.
- Testing shortcuts on a different setup. Remote-control clickers, laptops with Fn-locked F keys and some keyboard layouts change what "F5" sends. Try the combination on the machine you'll present from.
