By Mickle ā I write about budget PC gaming in India. I also run rentpass.store, a store for affordable PC games and subscriptions.
Everyone's excited about GTA 6. Almost nobody has done the math on what playing it will actually cost in India. Let's do it properly ā because the number is bigger than you think, and the cheapest path in is not the obvious one.
The full-price path. Start with the hardware. A PlayStation 5 in India costs roughly ā¹55,000. Then the game: Rockstar hasn't announced official India pricing, but at an expected $80 international price, industry estimates put the standard edition around ā¹6,000ā7,000. Add it up and you're looking at ā¹61,000ā62,000 minimum ā and that's before a second controller (around ā¹6,000), a PS Plus subscription if you want online play, or any of the small extras that always appear. Realistically, most first-time console buyers spend ā¹70,000+ before they finish the first mission.
The "I'll just wait" path. Free, but with a catch: there is no announced PC version and no date. Based on Rockstar's history with GTA V, the wait could be a year or more. You save all the money and miss the entire launch moment ā the shared discoveries, the unspoiled story, the weeks when everyone is playing the same thing. For some people that's fine. For most GTA fans, it's the worst option emotionally, even if it's the best one financially.
The rental path. Here's the math that matters. Instead of buying hardware, you rent GTA 6 access on a 1-day, 30-day or 40-day plan. The game runs on a real PS5 and streams to your Android phone or Windows PC ā the devices you already own. A 30-day rental comfortably covers the story campaign, and the total cost is a small fraction of the ā¹61,000+ buy-in. You need a stable internet connection (25 Mbps or better recommended) and the free Moonlight app. That's the entire shopping list.
Let's put the three paths side by side for a player who just wants to experience the story at launch:
| Path | Approximate cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Buy PS5 + game | ā¹61,000+ | Console, game, full experience |
| Wait for PC | ā¹0 (plus waiting) | Nothing until the port arrives |
| Rent remote access | A few hundred rupees | Full story campaign in the launch window |
The rental path isn't perfect ā streaming quality depends on your connection, and it's not the same as owning the hardware. But as a pure cost-per-hour-of-story calculation, it's not close. You're paying for the weeks you actually play, not for a console that will collect dust after you finish.
Who should do what? If you already own a PS5, ignore all of this and pre-order. If you're a PC gamer waiting for the port, a short rental is the cheapest spoiler-free trial imaginable ā play the opening, then decide if the eventual PC version is worth your money. And if you're a student or on a tight budget, renting is simply the only way the math works: GTA 6 on rent in India turns a ā¹61,000 problem into a few-hundred-rupee decision.
The launch is 19 November 2026. However you play it, do the math first ā and don't let excitement make the financial decision for you.
