Underwear: the product closest to skin and the most opaque in origin
Underwear and socks are the garments that spend the most hours in contact with skin. Cotton quality, absence of irritating dyes and elastic durability matter here more than in any other garment. And yet it is also one of the segments with the greatest supply chain opacity: 85% of underwear sold in Spain is manufactured in China, Bangladesh or Vietnam.
European and American underwear brands with the greatest democratic traceability exist, but they are few and predominantly in the premium segment. The mid-price alternative with verifiable democratic origin is more limited than in categories like footwear or outerwear.
This article examines the underwear and socks market from the democratic perspective, focusing on cotton, elastane and manufacturing.
Critical materials in underwear and their democratic origin
Pima cotton: the highest quality cotton for underwear. American Pima cotton (US, 7.85 β Arizona, New Mexico, Texas) and Peruvian Pima cotton (Peru, 6.41 β Ica, Piura) have the greatest democratic quality. Sea Island cotton from Barbados (6.80) is the most exclusive and democratic. Sunspel (UK) uses Sea Island cotton from Barbadian plantations for its most exclusive t-shirts.
Elastane (Lycra/Spandex): elastane for underwear waistbands is manufactured mainly by INVISTA (US, 7.85) under the Lycra brand, and by Asahi Kasei (Japan, 8.40). Low-cost elastics use Chinese elastane of inferior quality and durability. The difference is perceptible after 20β30 washes: INVISTA Lycra elastic maintains its elasticity; Chinese elastic prematurely relaxes.
Merino wool for socks: the highest quality merino wool for socks is Australian (8.86) or New Zealand (9.61). Falke (Germany), Darn Tough (US) and Icebreaker (New Zealand, 9.61) brands use merino from these sources.
Brands with the greatest democratic traceability
Hanro β Switzerland (9.15). The Swiss luxury underwear brand, founded in Liestal (Basel) in 1884. Its garments use American Supima cotton (100% extra-long Pima), INVISTA Lycra elastane and Calais (France) lace. Manufacturing in Europe (Switzerland, Germany). Price: β¬40β120/garment.
Falke β Germany (8.58). The German sock and hosiery brand, founded in Schmallenberg in 1895. Its merino wool socks use Woolmark-certified Australian merino. Manufacturing in Schmallenberg (North Rhine-Westphalia). Price: β¬15β40/pair.
Sunspel β UK (8.28). The British brand founded in Long Eaton in 1860. Its underwear uses Sea Island or Peruvian Pima cotton. Manufacturing in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire. Price: β¬30β80/garment.
Zimmerli β Switzerland (9.15). Swiss high-quality underwear since 1871. American Supima or Sea Island cotton, INVISTA Lycra elastane. Manufacturing in Aarburg (Aargau, Switzerland). Price: β¬50β150/garment.
Darn Tough β US (7.85). The market's most resistant merino wool socks, with unconditional lifetime guarantee. Manufactured in Northfield, Vermont (US) with Woolmark-certified Australian merino. Price: β¬20β35/pair.
Icebreaker β New Zealand (9.61). The merino clothing brand, now part of VF Corporation (US). Its merino is 100% from New Zealand sheep certified ZQ Merino. Manufacturing in countries with Fair Labor Association audits. Price: β¬20β80/garment.
The low-cost market and Chinese elastics
Low-cost underwear β packs of 3β6 briefs at β¬10β20 in Primark, Amazon, Carrefour β uses indifferentiated-origin cotton (possibly from Xinjiang, whose traceability is especially problematic due to the forced labour context documented by international bodies), Chinese elastane of limited durability and unpublished-formulation dyes.
Xinjiang (China) cotton deserves special mention: the region produces 85% of Chinese cotton and 20% of world cotton. The forced labour context documented by USAID, ILO and human rights organisations in Xinjiang makes this cotton especially problematic from a democratic and ethical perspective. The US Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA, 2021) prohibits the import of products with Xinjiang cotton to the American market.
Democratic Market lists underwear with American or Peruvian Pima or Supima cotton, INVISTA Lycra elastane and manufacturing in countries with an EIU score above 6.0. Because even the garment closest to your skin can have a verified origin.
