A beginner-friendly comparison of LTE (4G) and 5G NR: speed, latency, frequency, capacity, and architecture.
If you have heard the terms LTE and 5G NR but were not sure how they differ, this post is for you. No heavy jargon, just the key points.
What are they?
- LTE (Long-Term Evolution) is the 4G standard, built mainly for fast mobile internet.
- 5G NR (New Radio) is the 5G radio standard. It is faster and more responsive, and it can connect many more devices.
Key differences
1. Speed
LTE typically gives tens to a few hundred Mbps. 5G NR can reach several Gbps.
2. Latency (delay)
LTE latency is around 30-50 ms. 5G NR can go down to 1-10 ms. This helps with gaming, remote machine control, and self-driving cars.
3. Frequency bands
LTE works mostly on lower bands (below 6 GHz). 5G NR uses those too, and adds millimeter wave (mmWave) for extra speed, though with shorter range.
4. Device capacity
5G NR can support far more devices in the same area, which is useful for smart cities and IoT.
5. Smarter radio design
- Flexible numerology: 5G NR can adjust its radio settings for different needs. LTE uses fixed settings.
- Beamforming: 5G NR aims signals at individual users instead of broadcasting everywhere.
6. Network slicing
With a 5G core, one physical network can be split into multiple virtual networks, each with its own performance needs. LTE does not support this.
Quick comparison
| Feature | LTE (4G) | 5G NR |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Tens to hundreds of Mbps | Up to several Gbps |
| Latency | ~30-50 ms | ~1-10 ms |
| Frequency | Sub-6 GHz | Sub-6 GHz + mmWave |
| Devices | Fewer | Far more |
| Beamforming | Limited | Extensive |
| Network slicing | No | Yes (with 5G core) |
How they work together
Early 5G runs in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode. The phone connects to 4G first, and 4G handles control signaling while 5G adds extra data speed. Both stay active at the same time (called EN-DC). Later, Standalone (SA) mode uses a full 5G core and unlocks features like network slicing.
Conclusion
5G NR is not just a faster LTE. It is a redesigned system built for new uses. Today the two work together: LTE gives wide coverage, and 5G NR adds speed and low latency where it is available.
