The initial convenience of public cloud infrastructure often masks a critical long-term financial hazard: data egress fees. When running bandwidth-intensive platforms, outbound data costs scale unpredictably. Repatriating workloads to a zero-egress private cloud on dedicated bare metal solves this problem at the architecture level.
Key Architectural Layers:
- Compute Layer (Proxmox VE): Type-1 hypervisor managing KVM virtual machines and LXC containers via a unified web interface.
- Storage Layer (Ceph): Intercepts raw NVMe block devices across nodes, creating a fault-tolerant, auto-balancing object storage daemon (OSD) pool.
- Networking Layer (Proxmox SDN): Uses VXLAN and EVPN controllers to establish Layer 2 virtual networks across Layer 3 physical nodes, providing tenant isolation equivalent to a public cloud VPC.
- Cluster Quorum: Minimum 3 physical nodes required to maintain Corosync quorum and execute automated VM migration during hardware faults.
Public Cloud vs Bare Metal Cost Comparison:
100TB Monthly Egress: $5,000–$9,000 on Hyperscalers vs. $0.00 on EPY Host Bare Metal (included in unmetered bandwidth).
