Built-in image optimization sounds like it covers everything. Squarespace compresses uploaded files, serves them through a CDN, and generates responsive size variants, all without any configuration required.
For sites that publish occasionally and keep image libraries manageable, that's often sufficient. But Squarespace automatic image optimization works within a specific scope, and a bit falls outside it. File quality before upload, image dimensions, meaningful alt text, and how images are used across the site still require attention.
Squarespace handles much of the technical image delivery automatically, but it can't decide whether an image is unnecessarily large for its intended use or whether its description is useful to visitors and search engines.
This post looks at the situations where images still need direct attention, even after Squarespace has done everything it's going to do on its end.
Squarespace Does Its Part Up to a Point
Squarespace automatically compresses images, serves them through a CDN, and generates multiple size variants for different screen widths. That's genuinely useful, and it handles more than most comparable platforms do without any configuration.
The gap shows up in what it doesn't touch. It doesn't control the quality of files before they're uploaded. It doesn't convert every image to WebP by default. And it can't retroactively fix a media library full of oversized images that have been added over time without much thought.
What You Upload Is What You're Stuck With
Squarespace can optimize and resize what it receives, but starting with an unnecessarily large or poorly prepared source file can still leave room for improvement. Upload a 14MB original straight from a camera, and Squarespace will create optimized versions for display, but a well-prepared source can still give you more control over the final file size and visual quality.
Images account for the largest share of total page weight on both desktop and mobile. Every oversized upload adds to that baseline. The platform's compression helps at the margins, but the most effective step still happens before the file reaches Squarespace at all.
Your Hero Image Controls the LCP Score
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) measures how quickly the biggest visible element on a page finishes loading. On many Squarespace pages, that element is a hero image or header banner, so the image's loading behavior can have a direct impact on LCP.
Google's Core Web Vitals benchmark marks LCP "good" at under 2.5 seconds. A large hero image can contribute to a slow LCP even after Squarespace's processing, particularly when the image is the page's LCP element. Automatic optimization reduces the problem, it doesn't eliminate it.
Format Is a Decision Squarespace Can't Make For You
Squarespace automatically displays uploaded images in WebP format by default, which reduces the need to manually convert JPEG and PNG files before uploading. However, the source file still matters: starting with an unnecessarily large image can mean more data has to be processed and stored, and image dimensions should still be appropriate for how the image will be used.
The more useful decision before upload is whether the image has been resized and compressed appropriately for its intended use.
Every Empty Alt Text Field Is a Missed Signal to Google
Squarespace handles file processing. It doesn't handle content. Squarespace can use an image's description or file name as alt text in some cases, but certain image types, including image blocks and auto layouts, require alt text to be added manually.
This creates two separate problems. Search engines use alt text, along with the page content and other signals, to understand what an image depicts and how it relates to the page. Screen readers depend on it to describe visuals to users who can't see them. A blank or generic alt text field is a gap in both image SEO and accessibility, neither of which the platform's automatic features are designed to address.
Image Libraries Grow. Performance Problems Grow With Them.
A Squarespace site might be in solid shape at launch. After six months of blog posts, portfolio additions, and seasonal page updates, the media library tells a different story. Each new image added to a page without attention to file size or dimensions can increase the amount of data that page needs to load.
Using a reliable photo compressor as part of the publishing routine, something that processes images before they go live, keeps that drift from compounding over time. Auditing what's already there helps catch existing problems, but it doesn't prevent the same issues from recurring with every content update going forward.
A Bad Source File Follows You Across Every Screen Size
Squarespace's responsive image delivery is one of its stronger built-in features. It generates multiple size variants and serves the most appropriate one based on the visitor's screen. But the system works backward from whatever was originally uploaded.
A 5,000px uncompressed original produces responsive variants that are all heavier than they need to be across every breakpoint. The responsive delivery doesn't compensate for a bad source; it scales from it. Starting with a clean, well-compressed, correctly dimensioned file gives the system better inputs, which produces faster-loading results on every device.
Conclusion
Squarespace handles more image work automatically than most platforms, and that advantage is real. But automatic optimization operates within a fixed scope, and outside that scope, images still need attention.
File preparation, format selection, alt text, and consistent media library management are all decisions that fall to whoever is running the site. Relying entirely on what Squarespace does in the background leaves performance and SEO gaps that a slightly more deliberate approach to images would close without much extra effort.
Frequently Asked Questions
What image format should be used on Squarespace?
WebP is the better choice for most images. It delivers strong visual quality at smaller file sizes compared to PNG or JPEG and is supported across all modern browsers. PNG should be reserved for images that specifically require transparency.
How does LCP connect to image optimization on Squarespace?
LCP measures how fast the largest visible element on a page loads, almost always the hero image on a Squarespace page. If that image is unoptimized going in, LCP suffers regardless of how the rest of the page performs.
What does alt text do for a Squarespace site?
It gives search engines and screen readers context about what an image shows. Good alt text improves image indexation, strengthens overall page SEO, and makes the site accessible to users relying on assistive technology to navigate visual content.
Why do Squarespace sites slow down over time?
Primarily because media libraries grow without a consistent image preparation process. Each new upload without attention to size, format, or compression builds on previous ones, and automatic optimization can't fully offset that accumulation over time.
