The Numbers Speak
- 89,000+ attendees from 150+ countries
- 1.2 million sq ft of exhibit space
- $2.19 billion in U.S. manufacturing technology orders (up 28.9% YoY)
- 3.2% labor productivity growth in Q1 2026 (first quarter with zero hours growth)
The International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago, Sept 14-19, confirmed what the data already showed: manufacturing is investing faster than ever.
New Attractions This Year
Industrial AI Arena
32 exhibitors focused exclusively on AI-driven manufacturing. Plus Sandia National Laboratories demonstrating government-led R&D.
Industrial AI Conference
Full-day program covering:
- Predictive maintenance deployment
- Edge vs. cloud decision frameworks
- Quality inspection with computer vision
- Data readiness assessments
EOS M4 Onyx North American Debut
Next-generation laser powder bed fusion 3D printing platform. Built for defense and aerospace supply chains requiring faster, more resilient production.
What's Different About This Cycle
AI isn't a track — it's the floor.
At previous shows, AI had dedicated halls. This year, it's woven through every technology sector: machining, automation, metrology, software, tooling, quality control, additive manufacturing, production planning.
Visit MetalQuest Unlimited (Joplin, MO) — 70-person contract manufacturer that's attended every IMTS since 1998. Their strategy:
- Index 5-axis CNC with automation package
- Hermle 5-axis with digital twin integration
- 20+ Okuma CNCs paired with FANUC robots
- Unattended operation via multitasking
Result: higher utilization, lower labor dependency, resilient domestic production.
The Reshoring Signal
Manufacturing PMI hit 53.3% in June. New Orders Index expanded for sixth consecutive month.
Companies aren't just adopting AI — they're using it to compete on proximity, not just cost. Supply chain resilience beats cheap labor when geopolitical disruption strikes.
What to Watch in 2027
- Humanoid integration beyond structured environments
- AMR (autonomous mobile robot) convergence with traditional AGVs
- AI governance frameworks for shop-floor decision autonomy
- Defense industrial base demand shaping commercial tooling
The industry isn't waiting for AI to mature. It's deploying while building the safety rails.
Have you attended IMTS recently? What stood out to you?
