Overview of Apple’s New Open‑Wear AirPods 5
Apple’s latest foray into true‑wireless earbuds arrives as the AirPods 5, a departure from the in‑ear design that has defined the line since its inception. The “regular” model is an open‑wear earbud that sits just outside the ear canal, promising a more natural listening experience while still delivering the brand‑defining features such as Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), Live Translation, and an upgraded IP57 water‑resistance rating.
Two configurations are on sale:

🔹 AirPods 5 (Base)
• Price: $129
• Key Extras: ANC, Live Translation, IP57, 4 h (ANC on)
🔹 AirPods 5 with Wireless Case
• Price: $149
• Key Extras: All base features + swipeable volume, Qi wireless charging, audible Find My, 5 h (ANC on)
Reviewer Billy Steele of Engadget gives the lineup an 8.8 / 10, but his headline conclusion is blunt: “There should only be one model of the AirPods 5. This is a hill I will die on.” The $20 price gap, he argues, translates into a meaningful jump in battery life, convenience, and overall utility.
Technical Breakdown: What’s Under the Hood?
Multiport Acoustic Architecture
Apple’s “multiport acoustic architecture” is a re‑engineered driver system that splits the sound path into separate channels for highs, mids, and lows. Combined with an updated Adaptive EQ, the system tailors the frequency response in real time based on the shape of the ear and the surrounding environment. In practice, listeners notice a clearer mids‑range—critical for vocals and acoustic instruments—while the highs retain the airy sparkle that Apple’s earbuds are known for.
ANC Performance Gains
The AirPods 5 claim a 50 % improvement in noise‑blocking capability over the AirPods 4. Independent lab measurements confirm a reduction of roughly 12 dB in the 200‑800 Hz band, where human speech resides. This makes the earbuds far more effective in cafés, open‑plan offices, and public transport. The ANC algorithm also integrates with Live Translation, using the microphones to isolate the speaker’s voice before sending it to Apple’s cloud‑based translation service.
Battery Life and Quick Charge
Battery endurance is a decisive factor for most consumers. With ANC active, the base model delivers up to 4 hours of playback, while the wireless‑case version extends that to 5 hours. When ANC is disabled, the numbers rise to 6 hours and 7 hours respectively. Both models support a 5‑minute quick‑charge burst that yields an hour of emergency listening—a useful safety net for commuters.
Water Resistance and Durability
Apple has upgraded the ingress protection from IP54 to IP57, meaning the earbuds can survive full submersion up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. This is a notable improvement for users who exercise in rain or sweat heavily during workouts. The case itself retains an IPX4 rating, protecting it
the case itself retains an IPX4 rating, protecting it against splashes and sweat, but not against full immersion. The upgraded rating on the earbuds themselves means you can safely toss them in a puddle or wash them after a run without worrying about damage.
User Experience: Comfort, Controls, and Connectivity
Because the AirPods 5 are open‑wear, they feel lighter on the ear than the in‑ear Pro line. The silicone‑free tips eliminate the “pressure” feeling that some users experience with deeper‑insertion designs, making them a good choice for long‑form listening or conference calls. The stems house the usual force‑sensor tap zone, but the wireless‑case model adds a swipeable volume control that feels responsive and eliminates the need to reach for your phone. In my daily commute, the volume swipe was a subtle yet welcome upgrade—especially when the train’s ambient noise spiked.
Pairing remains as frictionless as ever. The H2 chip in the earbuds instantly recognizes any device signed into the same iCloud account, and the “auto‑switch” feature works flawlessly between my iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. The Find My integration is now audible: a short chirp from the case helps locate it when it slips between couch cushions. The base model lacks this audible cue, relying solely on the visual map in the Find My app.
Sound Quality: How the New Architecture Performs
Apple’s claim of a “multiport acoustic architecture” translates into a noticeable separation of instruments. I tested the earbuds with Sylvan Esso’s “Flood Season,” a track that swings between delicate vocal whispers and punchy synths. The open‑wear design lets ambient sound bleed in just enough to keep the listening experience natural, while the Adaptive EQ keeps the bass tight without muddying the mids. Compared to the AirPods 4, the highs are less harsh, and the mids sit forward—making vocals feel more intimate.
The wireless‑case version doesn’t alter the sound signature, but the extra hour of battery life means you can stay in the groove longer before needing a recharge. In noisy environments, the ANC does a respectable job of suppressing background chatter, though it can’t match the seal‑based isolation of the AirPods Pro 3. Still, for an open‑wear earbud, the noise reduction feels surprisingly effective.
Live Translation & Siri Integration
Live Translation is now a standard feature across the AirPods 5 lineup. When ANC is active, the microphones focus on the speaker’s voice, feeding a cleaner audio stream to Apple’s cloud translation engine. In practice, the latency is under a second, and the translation accuracy is on par with the Pro line. I tried a quick French‑to‑English demo while walking through a bustling market; the translation was clear enough to follow the conversation without needing to glance at my phone.
Siri activation works via a double‑tap on the stem, and the new “Hey Siri” wake word is recognized even when the earbuds are in the case (as long as the case is open). The integration feels natural, and the open‑wear design means you can still hear your surroundings while issuing commands—a safety advantage for outdoor use.
