Most SEO content is written for marketers. But a lot of what tanks rankings has nothing to do with copy. It's slow load times, broken canonical tags, missing schema, or JavaScript blocking the content search engines are trying to read. If you're the one deploying the site, this is the stuff worth checking before launch.
Core Web Vitals
Google weighs Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint, and Cumulative Layout Shift as ranking factors. Lazy load images below the fold, only preconnect to third party origins you're actually using, and check whether your content is stuck behind a client-side render. A site can feel fast on office wifi and still fail these metrics on a mid-range phone, so test with throttling on.
Structured data
Schema markup (Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQ, Article) is how search engines and AI answer tools understand a page without guessing. JSON-LD is the simplest way to add it. Put it server-side in a script type="application/ld+json" block so it's there on first load instead of injected after the fact by client JS.
Canonical tags
Multi-tenant apps, filtered product listings, and paginated blogs generate a lot of near-duplicate URLs. Set canonicals on purpose, and double check that noindex rules haven't leaked into pages you actually want indexed. This happens a lot after a staging to production migration.
Crawl budget
Large apps throw off thousands of low-value URLs: session parameters, internal search results, admin routes. Block them in robots.txt so crawlers spend time on pages that are actually worth indexing.
Infrastructure basics
CDN caching, image compression (WebP or AVIF), HTTP/2 or HTTP/3. None of this is optional anymore. It's the foundation everything else depends on.
This isn't a replacement for a content strategy, it's the layer that decides whether your content ever gets seen. Brightbox Digital runs technical audits alongside their web design work for exactly this reason. Most of these issues are cheaper to fix before launch than three months into a traffic plateau.
If you get handed an "SEO ticket" at work, start with this list before touching any copy. That's usually where the real problems are.
