Bird spikes are humane. They work by making a surface uncomfortable to land or perch on — the spikes don't stab, trap, or injure birds, they simply remove the flat space a bird needs to settle. When a pigeon approaches a spike-covered ledge, it moves on and finds somewhere else. No contact, no harm.
Why people worry — and why the concern is understandable
The word "spike" does a lot of heavy lifting in the wrong direction. It conjures images of something sharp and aggressive, which is why so many homeowners hesitate before buying. The reality is more mundane: a deterrent spike is a row of blunt-tipped polypropylene prongs, usually between 12mm and 36mm tall, that interrupts the flat landing zone a bird is looking for.
Pigeons, seagulls and starlings are not searching for a particular wall or fence out of loyalty — they're looking for a flat, stable surface at a useful height. If that surface has spikes on it, they don't fight them. They scan the roofline, see the profile is wrong, and land somewhere else within seconds. No injury, no distress, no drama.
The RSPB and most UK wildlife organisations make the same point: physical deterrents that prevent access, rather than harm animals, are the preferred approach to managing nuisance birds. Spikes sit clearly in that category.
Do bird spikes ever hurt birds?
In normal use on correctly installed spikes, no. The tips are blunt and the spacing is wide enough that a bird's feet don't get caught between prongs. The design goal is to make landing geometrically impossible — not to injure anything that tries.
The edge case worth knowing: if spikes are installed badly — gaps between strips, or too narrow a coverage across the surface — a bird may find a foothold at the edge of a strip, which defeats the deterrent effect entirely but still doesn't injure them. Poor installation means the spikes don't work, not that they cause harm.
One thing that genuinely does cause problems for birds is nesting material building up between spikes that are too flat or too widely spaced. Pigeons will nest on top of single-height flat spikes if the prongs are short enough — the nest material fills the gaps and suddenly the spikes have become a nesting platform rather than a deterrent. This is a failure of the spike design, not a welfare issue per se, but it's worth understanding: the wrong spike in the wrong place becomes useless rather than harmful.
What makes a spike design genuinely effective (and still humane)?
The critical variable is spike height variation. Standard flat spikes — the cheap strips with identical prong heights — stop birds from landing flat-footed, but they do nothing about animals that climb. A squirrel or cat approaching a fence top covered in single-height spikes will simply step over them, because all four feet land between prongs of the same height with no instability.
An irregular, three-height design changes this. ThornGuard spikes use three heights — 12mm, 22mm and 36mm — in a staggered pattern. When a climbing animal steps onto the strip, one foot always lands at an unexpected height, which breaks their balance and makes the surface feel unsafe. They reverse off. Again: no injury, just effective deterrence.
The same staggered design makes the surface harder for birds to land on too, because there's no consistent flat gap to aim for.
Is it legal to use bird spikes in the UK?
Yes — bird spikes are completely legal in the UK. You can fit them to your own property: fences, walls, window ledges, gutters, rooflines. There are no restrictions on using physical deterrents of this kind.
The one important caveat relates to active nests. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is illegal to disturb or destroy an active bird's nest — one that is currently being built, contains eggs, or contains young. This means you should not remove an active nest in order to fit spikes, and you should not fit spikes in a way that blocks birds from returning to an active nest.
The practical rule: fit spikes before nesting season begins (ideally late winter, before February), or wait until a nest is genuinely empty and the birds have moved on. Spikes installed on a surface that has never been used for nesting can go up at any time of year.

What about cats, squirrels and foxes — is it still humane for them?
The same principle applies to climbing animals. The spikes create instability underfoot rather than a painful puncture. A fox approaching a fence top fitted with deterrent spikes doesn't get hurt — it gets an unstable, unpredictable surface that feels wrong and backs off. The same is true for cats and squirrels.
This distinction matters because some homeowners conflate deterrent spikes with the barbed wire or broken glass that used to appear on old wall tops — materials that could and did injure animals. Modern polypropylene deterrent spikes are a completely different category: blunt-tipped, flexing slightly under pressure, and designed to create an uncomfortable rather than dangerous surface.
If you're trying to stop squirrels in particular — animals that are persistent enough to work around a deterrent that doesn't feel genuinely unstable — see our full guide on how to stop squirrels climbing your fence.
What about other deterrent methods — are they more or less humane?
For comparison:
Netting — also humane, but carries a small risk if birds get caught in poorly maintained or sagging net. Needs regular checks. More effective than spikes for large open roof areas where spikes can't cover every landing point.
Gel deterrents — non-toxic, but birds can get gel on their feathers and legs, which causes distress and requires cleaning. The RSPB has raised concerns about gel products. Most pest professionals now regard them as lower down the list than physical barriers.
Sonic and ultrasonic devices — no contact, no physical risk, but effectiveness is disputed and they can disturb other wildlife and neighbouring animals.
Fake predators (plastic owls, hawk kites) — harmless but usually ineffective within days once birds habituate to them not moving.
Physical spikes and netting are the methods most consistently recommended by pest control professionals in the UK precisely because they are both effective and carry no risk of injury when correctly installed.
Fitting spikes so they actually work (without creating problems)
The welfare and effectiveness of spikes depends heavily on correct installation:
- Cover the full width of the surface. Leaving a gap means birds simply use the gap. A pigeon only needs around 75mm of flat space to land.
- Butt strips end to end without gaps between sections.
- On fence tops, fold the strip so it covers the top face and wraps down both sides. A strip that only sits flat on top leaves the edges as usable perch space.
- Fix securely — loose or rattling strips that shift in wind can leave gaps or, in edge cases, create a hazard for smaller birds whose feet might catch in a moving strip.
For a full step-by-step, the ThornGuard fitting guide covers fence tops, wall caps, posts and ledges in detail.
If you can't drill into the surface — render, uPVC fascias, or an AC unit housing — adhesive pads are the right fixing method. The guide covers that too.
Common questions
Do bird spikes hurt pigeons?
No — correctly installed deterrent spikes do not injure pigeons. The tips are blunt and the prongs are spaced so that a bird's feet land between them rather than on them. The pigeon simply finds the surface unlandable and moves on without making contact with the spikes.
Are bird spikes legal in the UK?
Yes, bird spikes are legal on your own property. The only legal restriction to be aware of is the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, which makes it illegal to disturb or destroy an active bird's nest — so you should not remove a nest to fit spikes, and you should not install spikes that block access to a nest currently in use. Outside of active nesting, spikes can be fitted at any time.
Do bird spikes work on climbing animals like squirrels and cats?
Standard flat single-height spikes do not reliably stop squirrels, cats or foxes — these animals step over the uniform prongs without losing balance. Spikes with an irregular, staggered height pattern (such as the three-height design used by ThornGuard) create an unstable surface that climbing animals cannot walk across predictably, which is what stops them. See ThornGuard animal spikes for more on how the design works.
