i use my chrome browser alot when SSHing to my VMs. It was killing my laptop.
I'm an AWS cloud engineer. I don't live in an IDE all day. I live in Slack, GitHub, our AWS org (12 accounts through SSO), and about six AI chats I'm slightly embarrassed about.
Last Tuesday proved it. 2:14am, PagerDuty. ALB 5xx spike, eu-west-1, prod.
I roll over, grab my M3 Air, open Chrome. The fan on an Air, which has no fan, spiritually starts screaming. I can literally feel the heat through the desk.
47 tabs. I counted the next morning because I didn't believe it.
Three CloudWatch Logs Insights tabs with different time ranges I was comparing. Two EKS dashboards. The AWS SSO page that had expired and was just spinning. Four tabs of CDK docs for aws-cdk-lib/aws-elasticloadbalancingv2. A Bedrock playground run where I was testing a RAG prompt against our runbooks.
Two Claude chats one with a CloudFormation drift error pasted in, one where I asked it to explain a weird ThrottlingException. A ChatGPT tab with a Python script to parse ALB access logs from S3.
Two GitHub PRs I was supposed to review Monday. A Linear ticket. A FinOps dashboard someone linked in Slack with "is this related??" Spoiler: it wasn't. A re:Post thread about ALB target group health checks. And yeah, one Stack Overflow tab from Google. I clicked it, realized the answer was from 2019, closed it in four seconds. That's the entire role of Stack Overflow in 2026.
This is what tab hoarding looks like now. It's not 2015 "ooh cool jQuery plugins." It's SSO sessions expiring, AI chats with context you cannot lose, console tabs tied to specific accounts and regions, runbooks you swear you'll bookmark but never do.
And during an incident, you can't just Cmd+Shift+T your way out or close everything. That Claude chat has the exact error chain. That Logs Insights query took you 20 minutes to get right. Close the wrong thing and you lose 30 minutes you don't have.
So after the incident — we fixed it, bad target group deregistration delay, classic — I went looking for help. And everything I tried made it worse.
The popular tab managers in 2026 all want the same thing: configure me.
Build rules. Write regex for auto-grouping. Set up workspaces for Work / Personal / Side Project. Connect an account to sync across devices. Let our AI categorize your tabs. I'm sorry, I already manage OUs, SCPs, and Terraform workspaces.
I do not want to manage my browser like it's another AWS Organization. And I'm definitely not sending my console URLs and AI prompts to someone's SaaS. I spend all day telling people about least privilege. A tab manager doesn't need my data.
I uninstalled three of them in one afternoon.
What I kept is almost stupidly simple. FocusTab Manager. I clicked it because it was 28KB. My ad blocker is like 4MB. I figured it can't do much damage at that size.
It does exactly four things, and that's why it stuck.
You open the popup. You see every tab in this window, live. Favicon, real title, which ones are frozen, which ones are pinned. There's a search box. You type "s3" and you're on that tab. No more hunting through a 10px tab strip trying to hit the right favicon while Slack is blowing up.
You click De-Clutter & Freeze. That's the whole workflow.
It groups by site automatically. All my github.com tabs collapse into github.com (4). All my *.console.aws.amazon.com tabs group together. All my claude.ai chats group together. No regex I had to write. It just uses the domain, names the group, colors it.
It collapses everything except what you're actively reading. So my incident Logs Insights tab stays open and visible. The 9 other things fold away.
And it freezes the idle ones using Chrome's native tab discard. They sit there greyed out, using basically nothing. Click one and it reloads instantly SSO and all. My Bedrock playground state? Still there. My Claude chat scrollback? Still there. Nothing was closed.
Total time: about two seconds. Total config: zero.
My mornings are different now. I open the laptop, Chrome restores yesterday's mess — 20-something tabs because I never learn — I hit the FocusTab icon, hit De-Clutter, type two letters to jump to what I actually need. 3 groups, 9 frozen, quiet laptop. Before standup I'm done.
The feature that sold me wasn't even the grouping. It was Undo.
I've been burned by tools that "organize" by destroying. This one puts Undo, Collapse inactive, Expand all right under the main button. First time I ran it I braced for chaos, then just hit Undo to test it. Everything came back. Okay, I thought. You respect my mess. We can work together.
There's also Ctrl+Shift+D. Freezes everything without even opening the popup. I hit that before every Zoom screen-share now. No more "ooh, what's that tab?" moments with 30 tabs exposed.
Honest notes, because this isn't an ad:
The RAM ring is an estimate. ~60MB per frozen tab. It says so right under it. Is it exact? No. Chrome doesn't expose per-tab RAM to extensions. But directionally? I froze 9 tabs before a call last week, Activity Monitor dropped ~500MB, fan stayed off. Good enough. I prefer honest estimate over fake precision.
It doesn't do workspaces, doesn't sync across devices, doesn't have Pomodoro or AI summaries or whatever Product Hunt is excited about this week. If you need cross-laptop workspace sync with your team, this isn't that. I have my dotfiles and SSO for that. I wanted something local.
And that's actually the point. It's 100% local. No account. No analytics. Settings live in chrome.storage.local. As someone who reviews SCPs that deny s3:PutAccountPublicAccessBlock being turned off, I like tools that don't phone home with my console URLs.
Time math, since we're engineers:
Old triage: 10 minutes every morning finding the right CloudWatch tab, re-logging into expired SSO tabs one by one, re-running a Logs Insights query I closed by accident. Plus one 2am incident made 3x worse by a dying laptop.
New triage: 30 seconds. De-Clutter, search, go.
That's ~45 minutes a week back. Not life-changing. But over a quarter? That's a whole on-call shift I get back. And one less "laptop too slow during incident" story.
If you're still rocking 40 tabs across 5 accounts and 3 AI chats, try the dumb one-button approach first: FocusTab Manager on the Chrome Web Store
Free, no account, 10 seconds to test. If you hate it, hit Undo. That's literally built in.
Now excuse me, I have 23 tabs open and standup in four minutes.
