What Is ESTA? The US Travel Authorization Explained

What is ESTA?

ESTA — the Electronic System for Travel Authorization — is the United States' online pre-travel authorisation for citizens of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries. It is not a visa. It is a security pre-screening, run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), that checks you against watchlists and eligibility rules before you board, so that VWP travellers can visit the US without going through a consular visa process. Like Europe's ETIAS and the UK ETA, it exists so border authorities know who is arriving before the plane takes off.

With an approved ESTA you can travel to the United States by air or sea for tourism, business meetings, or transit, staying up to 90 days per visit. What it does not permit: working for a US employer, studying for credit, or moving to the US. Those all require an actual visa.

Who needs ESTA — and who can't use it

Citizens of the roughly 40 Visa Waiver Program countries — including most of the EU, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Australia, and New Zealand — must hold an approved ESTA before boarding a US-bound flight or ship. Airlines check it at the gate; without one, you are denied boarding, not just entry.

Just as important is who cannot use ESTA:

Citizens of non-VWP countries. If your passport is not from a Visa Waiver Program country, ESTA is simply not available to you — your path to the US is the B1/B2 visitor visa, which involves the DS-160 form and a consular interview.
VWP citizens with disqualifying history. Travel to certain countries (such as Iran, North Korea, or Syria since 2011, or Cuba more recently), dual nationality with some of those countries, a prior visa refusal or ESTA denial, or a previous overstay can make you ineligible for the VWP even with the right passport. These travellers also need the B1/B2 route.
Anyone staying longer than 90 days or travelling to work or study — again, a visa is required.

Cost, validity, and what you actually get

The official US government fee is $40.27 per application — the 2026 rate (it rose from $21 to $40 in September 2025, then to $40.27 on 1 January 2026; the US adjusts it for inflation every January). Every traveller needs their own ESTA — including infants and children. In exchange you get:

Two years of validity, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.
Unlimited entries during that period. You do not reapply for each trip.
Stays of up to 90 days each. Note that short hops to Canada or Mexico do not reset the 90-day clock.

When to apply

CBP's official guidance is to apply at least 72 hours before departure. Most applications are approved within minutes to hours, but a status of "Pending" can legitimately take up to 72 hours to resolve — and if the answer comes back "Travel Not Authorized", you need time to pursue a visa instead. The smart move is to apply as soon as your trip is realistic, not at the airport. Before you start, make sure your passport meets US validity rules.

What the ESTA form asks

The application takes most people 20–30 minutes. Expect questions on:

Passport and identity — passport number, issue and expiry dates, other names or aliases, other citizenships held now or in the past.
Contact and travel details — home address, email, phone, US point of contact or accommodation address, and emergency contact.
Employment — current or previous employer details.
Social media — the form asks for your social media identifiers (platforms and handles).
Eligibility questions — the nine yes/no security questions covering health, arrests and convictions, drug involvement, terrorism, prior visa refusals or ESTA denials, overstays, and travel to restricted countries. Answer these truthfully: a false answer discovered later is treated far more seriously than the underlying issue usually would be. Answering "yes" to one of these questions does not automatically mean refusal — but it does mean your application gets a closer look, which is exactly why applying well ahead of travel matters.

Approval is not entry

An approved ESTA authorises you to travel to the United States — the decision to admit you is made by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, funds, ties to home, and length of stay. The vast majority of prepared travellers pass through without issue, but it is worth understanding how that conversation works: see our full guide on why an approved ESTA doesn't guarantee entry.

Renewals and passport changes

There is no such thing as "renewing" an ESTA — when it expires, you simply submit a new application with a new $40.27 fee. Two situations force a new application early:

A new passport. Your ESTA is electronically linked to the exact passport you applied with. Renew your passport — even with the same name — and the old ESTA dies with the old document.
Changed circumstances. A change of name, gender, or citizenship, or a change in your answer to any eligibility question, requires a fresh application. (Email and address details, by contrast, can simply be updated.)

Common mistakes to avoid

Typos in the passport number or dates. The airline's check matches your ESTA to your passport character by character; one wrong digit can mean denied boarding.
Leaving it until the airport. A "Pending" status at the check-in desk is a trip-ruining gamble — respect the 72-hour guidance.
Assuming the old ESTA survives a new passport. It doesn't (see above) — this is the single most common reason experienced travellers get caught out.
Guessing on the eligibility questions. If a question genuinely applies to you, answering "no" to force an approval creates a misrepresentation problem that follows you for life.
Treating 90 days as flexible. Overstaying under the VWP permanently ends your visa-free travel to the US.

FAQ

Is ESTA a visa?

No. ESTA is a travel authorisation for Visa Waiver Program travellers — a fast online check linked to your passport, not a visa. It covers tourism, business, and transit for up to 90 days per visit.

How much does ESTA cost?

The official US government fee is $40.27 per application (the 2026 rate; the US adjusts it for inflation every January). Every traveller, including children and infants, needs their own ESTA.

How long is ESTA valid?

Two years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. It allows unlimited entries, with each stay up to 90 days.

How early should I apply for ESTA?

CBP's official guidance is at least 72 hours before travel. Approval is often within minutes, but a pending application can take up to 72 hours — apply as soon as your trip is realistic.

Do I need a new ESTA if I get a new passport?

Yes. ESTA is electronically linked to the exact passport you applied with, so a new passport always requires a new ESTA application — even if the old ESTA hasn't reached its two-year expiry.

What if I'm not from a Visa Waiver Program country?

Then ESTA isn't available to you. You'll need a US B1/B2 visitor visa instead, which involves the DS-160 form and a consular interview — a longer process, so start early.
