The Entry/Exit System (EES): What Travelers Need to Know

What is the Entry/Exit System (EES)?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) is the European Union's automated IT system for registering non-EU travellers each time they cross an external border of the Schengen Area. It began its phased rollout on 12 October 2025 and is now in operation, with deployment being completed across the remaining crossing points through 2026. In place of the familiar ink stamp, EES creates a digital record of who you are, when and where you entered Europe, and when and where you left.

It is the biggest change to how Europe's borders work in decades — and one of the most misunderstood. So let's be precise about what EES is not: it is not a visa, not a travel authorisation, and not something you can apply, register or pay for in advance. There is no EES form, no EES fee and no EES website for travellers. Registration happens to you, at the border, automatically. Any site offering to "register you for EES" for a charge is selling something that does not exist.

What changed at the border in October 2025

Before EES, a border officer stamped your passport on entry and exit, and your permitted stay was worked out — imperfectly — from those stamps. Faded ink, missed stamps and full passport pages made the old system leaky in both directions: genuine travellers were sometimes questioned over stamps that were never applied, while overstays often went unnoticed altogether. Since 12 October 2025, that manual process has been progressively replaced by biometric registration.

Your first crossing: biometric enrolment

The first time you cross an external Schengen border under EES, you are enrolled in the system. Your passport is scanned, and the system records your name and travel-document details, your fingerprints, a facial image, and the date and place of your entry. Depending on the crossing point this happens at a self-service kiosk, at the booth with a border officer, or a combination of the two. Enrolment adds a few minutes per traveller — which is why queues at major airports and land borders have been noticeably longer at peak times during the rollout.

Every crossing after that: faster

Once you are enrolled, subsequent crossings are a verification rather than a registration — the system matches you against your existing record and logs the new entry or exit. That check is typically quicker than manual stamping ever was, and your record stays on file (in most cases for three years), so frequent visitors are not re-enrolled from scratch on every trip.

No more passport stamps

Under EES your passport is no longer stamped at Schengen's external borders. The digital record is now the authoritative account of your entries and exits — which matters, because it is also the authoritative count of your days spent in the Schengen Area.

Who EES applies to

EES applies to non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays — up to 90 days in any 180-day period. That covers both groups of short-stay travellers:

Visa-free visitors — Americans, Britons, Canadians, Australians, Japanese and other visa-exempt nationals.
Schengen short-stay visa holders — travellers who needed a visa for the same kind of trip.

EU and Schengen-country citizens are not registered in EES, and neither are non-EU nationals holding a residence permit or long-stay visa for a Schengen country — their stays are governed by those documents instead. If you are unsure which category your trip falls into, our visa requirements checker will tell you in seconds.

Overstaying is now flagged automatically

This is the change with real teeth. Under the stamp system, an overstay had to be spotted by an officer doing date arithmetic in a queue. Under EES, the system itself calculates your remaining days and automatically identifies travellers who exceed the 90/180 limit. An overstay recorded in EES is visible at every external Schengen border — not just the one where it happened — and can lead to fines, removal, entry bans and harder questions on every future trip. It could also weigh against you when ETIAS applications eventually open, since that system will draw on the same data.

The practical consequence: the 90/180 rule itself has not changed, but the margin for sloppy counting has gone. If your trips are frequent or back-to-back, count your days precisely with our free Schengen 90/180 calculator before you book.

EES vs ETIAS: the live system and the future requirement

EES and ETIAS are announced together so often that they blur into one — but they are different systems doing different jobs at different points in time:

EES is live now. It operates at the physical border, registers you automatically, and involves nothing to apply for and nothing to pay.
ETIAS is a future requirement. It will be an online pre-travel authorisation (€20, valid three years) for visa-exempt travellers — but it is not yet open, and the EU currently publishes no launch date, saying only that it will begin after EES and be announced several months in advance.

That distinction is also your best scam filter: nobody can register you for EES in advance, and nobody — no website, no agency, and not us either — can file an ETIAS application today, because the system does not accept any.

What travellers should actually do

There is nothing to apply for — but EES quietly raises the stakes on the basics:

Check your passport, not just your ticket. For Schengen entry your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years and remain valid for at least three months after the day you intend to leave. Run yours through our passport validity checker before you book.
Count your Schengen days precisely. With entries and exits logged to the day, the 90/180 rule is now enforced to the day. Use the calculator if you visit Europe more than once or twice a year.
Allow extra time for your first arrival under EES. Biometric enrolment takes minutes, not hours — but at a busy hub in high season, minutes per traveller add up.
Ignore anyone selling EES. There is no EES application, fee, waiting list or pre-registration — full stop.

Charta Visa is an independent private service, not a government website. We help travellers with authorisations that genuinely require an application — such as the US ESTA and the UK ETA — and we build free tools for the rules above. EES itself asks nothing of you beyond a valid passport and an honest day count; now the counting is simply done by a computer that never misses.

FAQ

Do I need to apply for EES in advance?

No. There is no EES application, form, fee or pre-registration — for anyone. Registration happens automatically at the border the first time you cross; any website selling EES registration is a scam.

Does EES stamp my passport?

No. EES replaces manual passport stamping at Schengen's external borders. Your entries and exits are recorded digitally, and that record — not stamps — is now the authoritative count of your days in Europe.

What data does EES collect?

Your name and travel-document details, biometric data (fingerprints and a facial image), and the date and place of each entry and exit.

Does EES replace ETIAS?

No — they are separate systems. EES is live now and records your crossings at the border. ETIAS will be an online authorisation obtained before travel — it is not yet open, and the EU currently publishes no launch date for it.

Will EES slow down the border?

Your first crossing takes longer because your biometrics are enrolled, and busy crossing points have seen longer queues during the rollout. Once enrolled, later crossings are a quick verification — typically faster than stamping was.

What happens if I overstay under EES?

The system calculates your days automatically and flags overstays without an officer needing to notice. An overstay is visible at every external Schengen border and can lead to fines, entry bans and problems on future trips.
