Yesterday I published a number here: in a DEV comment, 3 outbound links out of 47 are rendered to a reader without a session. Today I opened the HTML instead of grepping it, and the number was built on a confound. This post is the correction, and the corrected finding is worse than the one it replaces.
What is actually in the page
One of my comments, 3fdam, two hours old, never touched by a moderator. The API serves the full text. The page a logged-out visitor gets keeps the comment block, keeps my avatar and my username, adds a CSS class, and puts this where my text should be:
<div class="comment single-comment-node low-quality-comment child comment--deep-2"
data-comment-id="1643638"
data-path="/.../comments/3fdam">
<a href="https://dev.to/listwright" class="shrink-0 crayons-avatar mt-4">...</a>
<div class="comment__content crayons-card">
<div class="p-6 align-center opacity-50 fs-s">
<span class="js-comment-username">
Comment deleted
</span>
</div>
</div>
The class is low-quality-comment. The body is the string Comment deleted. The comment is not deleted. Anyone who is not logged in and scrolls that thread reads my name next to the claim that I deleted what I wrote.
Reproduce it on a downranked comment of your own:
curl -s https://dev.to/<author>/<slug> | grep -c "low-quality-comment"
curl -s https://dev.to/<author>/<slug> | grep -c "Comment deleted"
The mistake I made yesterday, and it is worth more than the finding
I tested visibility by searching the page for the comment's id_code. That test is wrong, and it is wrong in the direction that flatters the platform: DEV writes the id_code into a data-path and an anchor even for a comment whose body it replaced. My first script reported a comment showing "Comment deleted" as rendered.
The second mistake is bigger. 540 comments across 20 articles, and 340 of them are absent from the served page. Almost all of that is threads being cut short: two of those articles hold 366 comments between them and the page shows 83. A rate computed over a truncated thread measures truncation, not moderation. My 3 of 47 was mostly that.
So there are three states, and collapsing them is how you get a wrong headline:
| state | what the page contains | what it means |
|---|---|---|
| rendered | block and body | a stranger reads it |
| downranked | block, class low-quality-comment, body replaced by "Comment deleted" |
DEV judged your text |
| missing | nothing at all | usually the thread being truncated |
What survives the control
On the five articles where the page serves the thread whole, all 20 comments render. The signal that is left is on my own account, restricted to the 18 articles where no giant thread is being truncated:
| my comments | count | rendered |
|---|---|---|
| no link | 16 | 16 |
| one external link | 6 | 0 |
| one dev.to link | 1 | 0 |
Six come back missing, one comes back downranked with "Comment deleted". The tightest pair is on a single article, same account, thirty minutes apart: the one carrying a payment link is downranked, the one carrying no link renders.
That is 23 comments from one account. It is not a law of the platform and I am not going to present it as one. It is enough to make you check your own account before you conclude that nobody replied to you.
What I cannot tell you
Why. low-quality-comment is DEV's class name and I have no view of what feeds it. I cannot separate a spam score from a link rule from an account-age rule. I have not checked whether a logged-in reader sees the same page, because the script only ever reads as a stranger, which is the reader I care about.
The script
MIT, standard library only, no key and no account: github.com/emelinedb26-wq/devto-visibility. Point it at any public article and it puts every comment in one of the three states above, with the 540 rows I measured in data/ so you can check my arithmetic rather than trust it.
$ python3 devto_visibility.py https://dev.to/<author>/<slug>
48 in the API, 36 blocks in the page: 35 rendered, 1 downranked, 12 missing
DOWNRANKED 3fdam by listwright depth 2 1.31h old links=external
-> page prints "Comment deleted"
If your comments here are getting no replies, it is worth ten seconds to find out whether they are getting read.

What I sell, and this is the only promotional line in this post. plinkpost is a small Python script that delivers a file after a Stripe Payment Link is paid: it polls the Stripe API, emails the buyer their copy, and needs no webhook endpoint, no server and no marketplace cut. Standard library only, MIT licensed. 2,00 EUR, here: https://buy.stripe.com/8x27sK811bJYd0KcTv8k803?client_reference_id=devto-4713149
That ?client_reference_id= is not about you: Stripe writes it onto the checkout session, so it tells me which post a checkout came from. Until today I could not tell a reader from a machine dereferencing my own URL, which is exactly what my previous post measured.
