B2B outreach becomes complicated when every communication channel operates independently.
A prospect might discover a company through LinkedIn, receive an email several days later, and eventually have a conversation with a sales representative over the phone. If those interactions are not connected, the sales team may lack the context needed to make the next interaction relevant.
This is why multichannel outreach should not simply mean “using more channels.” The real opportunity is creating a connected process where email, LinkedIn, and phone support different stages of the same buyer journey.
The Problem With Isolated Outreach
When channels are managed separately, prospects can experience repetitive messaging.
For example, a prospect might receive an email introducing a service and then receive a LinkedIn message introducing the same service without any reference to the previous interaction. A sales representative may then make a phone call without knowing whether the prospect has already engaged with the company's content.
The issue is not the number of touchpoints. It is the lack of context between them.
A connected approach allows teams to understand what has already happened before deciding what should happen next.
Use Each Channel for What It Does Best
Email, LinkedIn, and phone communication have different strengths.
Email works well for personalized outreach, educational content, follow-ups, proposals, and information that prospects may want to review later.
LinkedIn can support professional visibility and relationship development. Content interactions and profile activity can help prospects become familiar with a company before a direct sales conversation.
Phone provides real-time interaction. It can be useful when a prospect has shown enough interest to justify a direct conversation, especially when qualification or detailed discovery is required.
The objective is not to duplicate communication across all three channels. It is to make each interaction contribute something different.
Build Around Prospect Context
A useful multichannel workflow starts with context.
Before sending a follow-up, the sales team should understand the prospect's previous interactions where relevant. Did they respond to an email? Did they engage with a particular topic on LinkedIn? Did they request additional information? Has someone from the company already spoken with them?
This information can influence the next action.
For example, someone who has engaged with educational content may be ready for a more specific conversation, while a completely cold prospect may need more awareness-building before a phone call makes sense.
This approach helps transform outreach from a rigid sequence into a more responsive process.
Connecting Data and Communication
Technology can make this process easier, but the underlying principle remains simple: relevant prospect information should be available when the next interaction takes place.
Sales and marketing teams can organize information around key events such as:
Initial LinkedIn engagement
Email interaction
Content downloads
Replies or questions
Meeting requests
Phone conversations
Follow-up requirements
When these events are understood as parts of one journey, teams can make better decisions about timing and messaging.
Measuring the Journey Instead of Individual Activities
A major advantage of connected outreach is better interpretation of performance.
An email may not generate a direct reply but could contribute to a later LinkedIn interaction or phone conversation. Similarly, a LinkedIn interaction may not immediately produce a lead but can help establish familiarity before a sales message is sent.
This makes channel-level metrics useful but incomplete on their own.
Instead of asking only how many emails were sent or how many LinkedIn interactions occurred, businesses can also examine how different touchpoints contribute to qualified conversations and opportunities.
Outbound Marketo discusses this connected approach to B2B outreach, emphasizing the importance of coordinating communication channels around the broader buyer journey.
The goal is not maximum outreach volume. It is a better-connected process where every interaction has a clear purpose.
