The Core Anatomy of a Staircase
Before diving into the mathematics, it is vital to define the standard terminology used in stair construction. Every staircase is an interconnected system of horizontal and vertical planes.
Total Rise: The exact vertical distance from the finished lower floor surface to the finished upper floor surface.
Total Run: The total horizontal distance that the staircase covers, measured from the face of the first riser to the face of the last riser (or the edge of the upper landing).
Riser: The vertical board or open space between one step and the next. Its height determines how high you lift your foot with each step.
Tread: The horizontal board you step on. Its depth determines how much foot surface area is supported.
Stringer: The structural diagonal member (usually a 2x10 or 2x12 lumber piece) notched to support both the treads and risers.
Nosing: The front edge of the tread that projects out past the vertical face of the riser below it.
Fundamental Stair Formulas Explained
Stair building relies on specific mathematical ratios designed to match the natural human stride. If steps are too steep, they become exhausting and dangerous; if they are too shallow, they cause awkward pacing. Carpenters rely on a few universal rules of thumb backed by rigid geometry.
1. Calculating the Number of Risers
To begin your calculation, you must first determine the total vertical height your stairs must span. Measure the total rise in inches.
Standard building codes generally mandate that individual riser heights should not exceed 7 ¾ inches (though local codes can vary, often restricting it to 7 or 7.5 inches for residential structures). To find the number of risers needed:
Total Risers = Total Rise (in inches) / Ideal Riser Height (approx. 7 to 7.5 inches)
Because you will rarely get a whole number, you must round the resulting number up or down to the nearest whole integer. Once you have the exact number of whole risers, you recalculate the exact individual riser height:
Exact Unit Riser Height = Total Rise / Number of Risers
2. Calculating Individual Tread Depth (Run)
Once you have your riser height, you determine the tread run. Most residential codes require a minimum tread depth of 10 inches (excluding nosing), with many builders aiming for 10 to 11 inches. Common construction rules state that:
The 25-Inch Rule: The sum of one riser height plus one tread run should equal approximately 25 inches (Riser + Tread = ~25").
The Step-Pitch Rule: Twice the riser height plus the tread run should equal between 24 and 25 inches (2(Riser) + Tread = 24" to 25").
3. Calculating Total Run and Stringer Length
The total horizontal distance (total run) is calculated by multiplying the number of treads by the individual tread depth. Note that the number of treads is always one less than the number of risers (since the final step steps onto the upper floor surface).
Total Run = Number of Treads × Unit Tread Depth
To find the exact length of the diagonal stair stringer, you apply the Pythagorean theorem ($a^2 + b^2 = c^2$), where $a$ is the total rise and $b$ is the total run:
Stringer Length = SquareRoot((Total Rise)² + (Total Run)²)

Worked Example 1: Standard Basement Staircase
Let us walk through a practical scenario. Suppose you are framing a staircase for a basement remodel. You take careful measurements and find the vertical distance from the top of the concrete basement floor to the top of the main floor subfloor is exactly 100 inches.
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Determine Riser Count: Divide 100 inches by a target riser height of 7.5 inches.
100 / 7.5 = 13.33 risers
Round to the nearest whole number: 13 risers.
- Calculate Exact Unit Riser Height:
100 inches / 13 risers = 7.69 inches
Wait! 7.69 inches exceeds the standard 7.75-inch code limit in some regions, but let us check local codes. If 7.75" is the absolute max, 13 risers might be too few if the code is strict, or it may pass if 7.75" is allowed. Let us recalculate with 14 risers to be safer and more comfortable:
100 inches / 14 risers = 7.14 inches per riser. This is a very comfortable, code-compliant riser height.
- Determine Tread Count:
Since there are 14 risers, there will be 13 treads (14 - 1 = 13).
- Calculate Tread Depth (Run):
Let us target a standard 10-inch tread depth (excluding a 1-inch nosing).
Total Run = 13 treads × 10 inches = 130 inches (10 feet 10 inches).
- Calculate Stringer Length:
Using the Pythagorean theorem:
Total Rise = 100"
Total Run = 130"
Stringer Length = SquareRoot(100² + 130²) = SquareRoot(10,000 + 16,900) = SquareRoot(26,900) = 164.01 inches (approx. 13 feet 8 inches).
Worked Example 2: Short Deck Access Staircase
Consider an outdoor deck where the vertical distance from grade level to the top of the deck framing is 36 inches.
Step-by-Step Calculation:
- Determine Riser Count:
Targeting a 7-inch riser height: 36 / 7 = 5.14. Let us use 5 risers.
Exact Riser Height = 36 inches / 5 risers = 7.2 inches per riser.
- Determine Tread Count:
5 risers - 1 = 4 treads.
- Calculate Tread Depth:
Using standard 2x6 decking boards laid flat with a small gap (yielding an actual 11-inch run):
Total Run = 4 treads × 11 inches = 44 inches.
- Calculate Stringer Length:
Total Rise = 36"
Total Run = 44"
Stringer Length = SquareRoot(36² + 44²) = SquareRoot(1,296 + 1,936) = SquareRoot(3,232) = 56.85 inches (approx. 4 feet 9 inches).

Critical Assumptions and Adjustments in Stair Building
Mathematics on paper is only half the battle. Real-world construction introduces variables that must be accounted for before you make your first cut.
Accounting for Finished Flooring
The single most common mistake beginners make is measuring the total rise from the unfinished subfloor without accounting for finished flooring materials. If you add tile, hardwood, or thick carpet and underlayment to the upper floor, you effectively reduce the height of your top riser. Conversely, if you add flooring to the bottom landing after cutting your stringers, your bottom riser will be too short.
Always calculate your total rise using the finished floor heights at both the top and bottom landings. When evaluating material quantities for flooring layouts or concrete pads, utilize specialized resources like our Tile Calculator to ensure your surrounding areas align correctly with the stair thresholds.
The Bottom Riser Deduction
When you cut a stair stringer from a 2x12 board, you must account for the thickness of the tread material you will attach to the bottom of the stringer (resting on the floor). If your tread material is 1.5 inches thick (such as a 2x lumber tread), you must subtract 1.5 inches from the bottom of the first riser cut. If you fail to make this deduction, your entire staircase will sit 1.5 inches too high, throwing off the top step connection.
Step-by-Step Instructions for Framing Layout
Once your math is verified, layout is executed using a framing square and stair gauges (brass trammel points).
Select Straight Lumber: Choose 2x12 boards free of major knots, twists, or cups. Crown the boards and mark the straight edges.
Set Your Framing Square: Attach stair gauges to your framing square corresponding to your exact unit rise (e.g., 7.2 inches) on one leg and your unit run (e.g., 10 inches) on the other leg.
Mark the Stringer: Starting near the top end of the 2x12, align the square against the straight edge and trace your first rise and run. Step the square down the board for the exact number of treads/risers required.
Layout Top and Bottom Plumb Cuts: Draw the lines for the top landing attachment and the bottom floor rest, ensuring you make the necessary thickness deductions at the base.
Cut Carefully: Use a circular saw to make the main cuts, stopping precisely at the inside corner. Finish the inside corners cleanly with a hand pull saw or jigsaw to prevent over-cutting, which weakens the stringer structural integrity.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Ignoring Building Codes: Always check local municipal codes before cutting. Many jurisdictions enforce strict maximum riser heights (often 7 ¾ inches) and minimum tread depths (often 10 inches). Variations greater than 3/8 inch between any two risers in a staircase are almost universally prohibited due to tripping liabilities.
Neglecting Headroom Clearance: Ensure there is at least 6 feet 8 inches of vertical headroom measured vertically from the leading edge of the tread to the ceiling or framing above.
Forgetting Stringer Spacing: Stringers should generally be spaced no more than 16 inches apart center-to-center for standard wooden treads to prevent sagging and bounce. Wide staircases require three or four parallel stringers.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many risers do I need if my total rise is 96 inches?
Divide 96 inches by your target riser height. For example, dividing by 7.5 gives 12.8. Rounding to the nearest whole integer gives 13 risers. Dividing 96 by 13 gives an exact unit riser height of approximately 7.38 inches, which is well within standard residential code limits.
Why is the number of treads always one less than the number of risers?
The top riser terminates directly at the upper floor surface, meaning the upper floor itself acts as the final landing rather than a separate tread board. Therefore, a staircase with 14 risers will only require 13 horizontal tread boards.
How do I account for carpet thickness on stair treads?
If you plan to carpet your stairs, consult the carpet installer regarding pad and carpet pile thickness. You may need to slightly reduce the wood tread depth or adjust stringer dimensions to maintain uniform step geometry after the soft goods are installed.
What is the maximum allowed variance between stair risers?
Most building codes mandate that the greatest riser height within a flight cannot exceed the smallest riser height by more than 3/8 inch. Even minor discrepancies break human muscle memory and cause stumbles.
Can I use 2x10 lumber for stair stringers?
For very short staircases with minimal spans, 2x10s can sometimes work, but 2x12 lumber is the industry standard. After cutting the notch for the rise and run, you must retain enough un-notched throat material (at least 5 inches) to maintain structural load-bearing strength.
What angle should a standard staircase be built at?
Most comfortable residential staircases have a pitch or slope angle between 30 and 35 degrees relative to the horizontal floor.
Accurate stair building is a blend of rigorous arithmetic and careful carpentry technique. By taking precise measurements of your finished floor heights, double-checking your rise and run against local codes, and accounting for
